LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's volleyball team fell in four sets to McKendree on Saturday night at DeGol Arena. The Flash fell 25-23, 19-25, 22-25 and 25-27.
Saint Francis falls to 8-11 on the season, while McKendree improves to 7-12.
Jeff Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria) led the Flash with a match-high 22 kills on a .364 clip.
Nick Bennett (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) added four blocks while
Adam Kniffen (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) recorded 40 assists and a team-high 13 digs.
Stephen Braswell (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) contributed with nine kills and 10 digs.
Saint Francis turned a 5-3 deficit to a 7-5 lead after kills from Braswell and
Brandon Buck (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) in the opening set. The set would remain a battle as neither team could gain much of a lead until the Bearcats rattled off seven straight points to take a 17-12 lead. The Red Flash continued to chip away at the Bearcats' lead, as Saint Francis would go on a 9-3 run to close the set 25-23.
A McKendree attack error helped Saint Francis take a 7-6 lead in the second set. The Red Flash offense would struggle as the Bearcats strung together five straight points to take a commanding 14-8 lead. McKendree never looked back and cruised to a 25-19 win.
In the third set, McKendree jumped out to a 6-1 lead. The Bearcats stretched their lead to as many as four at 12-8 before a McKendree attack error kept Saint Francis within two down, 12-10. A Hogan kill put the Flash within striking distance but the Bearcats retook a four-point lead at 18-14, and took the set 25-22.
A pair of kills and McKendree miscues gave Saint Francis a 6-2 lead in the fourth set. Back-to-back kills from Hogan put the Flash ahead comfortable, 13-7. The Bearcats clawed their back into the game after going on a 6-3 run to make it a one-point set, 17-16. With the Flash leading 22-19, the Bearcats closed the set and match on a 8-3 run.
Saint Francis returns to action on Wednesday when the Flash welcome in UC Irvine at 7 p.m.
