Men’s Basketball Falls 71-61 Against Mount St. Mary’s In NEC Championship Game

EMMITSBURG, Md. – After an incredible run through the NEC Tournament, the Saint Francis Men's Basketball team fell 71-61 against Mount St. Mary's in the NEC Championship game on Tuesday in a sold-out Knott Arena.  The Red Flash led at halftime, but a big run by Mount St. Mary's to start the second half led the Mountaineers to the victory.  Saint Francis is now 16-16, with Mount improving to 19-15.
 
The Red Flash, led by Head Coach Rob Krimmel, was paced by sophomore Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte)'s 17 points and nine rebounds.  Blackmon hit three triples.  Sophomore Josh Nebo (Houston, Texas/Cypress Lakes) recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 12 points, on five-of-nine shooting, and 11 rebounds to go with three blocks.  Sophomore Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) had 11 points and seven rebounds, hitting five-of-eight shots from the floor.  Senior Georgios Angelou (Halkida, Greece/Lykeio Kanithou) contributed 10 points, while freshman Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) had seven points and seven rebounds.
 
Saint Francis shot 41 percent from the floor, making 24-of-58 shot attempts, and hit 31 percent of its looks from three, going 6-for-19.  SFU was 7-of-17 from the free throw line (41 percent).  SFU shot 40 percent in the first half and 42 percent in the second half.  SFU also won the battle on the boards, 43-35, but committed 17 turnovers, which led to 19 points for Mount St. Mary's. 
 
Sophomore Elijah Long led the Mount with 24 points, on 9-of-19 shooting, and nine rebounds.  Junior Robinson added 22 points, including 11-of-13 from the free throw line, while freshman Miles Wilson had 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Junior Chris Wray contributed 10 points. 
 
Mount St. Mary's shot 39 percent from the floor, going 24-of-62, and 23 percent from three (5-of-22).  The Mount hit 18-of-22 attempts from the free throw line.  Mount St. Mary's made 28 percent of its shots in the first half and 54 percent in the second half.
 
After a 22-4 run to close the first half, the Red Flash led 31-23 at halftime.  SFY shot 40 percent from the floor in the half, making 13-of-32 shot attempts, but went just two-of-nine from three and 3-of-10 from the free throw line.  King led SFU with 11 points and seven rebounds in the half.  King hit five-of-eight shots.  Nebo had seven points and seven rebounds, while Blackmon had six points and four boards. 
 
The Mount shot 40 percent from the field, making 10-of-36 looks, but SFU held Mount to no three-pointers as MSM went 0-of-10 from beyond the arc. Mount was three-of-five from the free throw line.  Long led Mount with 14 points and seven rebounds in the half and made 6-of-14 shot attempts. 
 
Saint Francis scored six of the first eight points in the game, with Blackmon putting in the first four points, on a free throw and a three. King added a layup.
 
However, Mount responded with a 17-3 run to hold a 19-9 lead with 8:51 to go in the half.  Long scored eight of Mount's 17 points during the run, with three layups and a pair of free throws.  Robinson added a pair of layups and Wray made a layup.  Wilson scored the last three points of the stretch, with a free throw and a layup.
 
Saint Francis answered with its own big run, a 22-4 run to end the half.  SFU scored 11 straight points during one point of the run.  Through five players scored during the run, King led the way with nine points.  After a jumper by Nebo to start the run, King scored SFU's next seven points, with two layups and a three.  Braxton added a layup and a free throw before King got on the board again with a floater.  Freshman Randall Gaskins Jr. knocked down a jumper before Blackmon made a layup and Angelou closed the half by cutting through the left side for a layup.
 
The Mountaineers came out hot in the second half, beginning the half with a 26-4 run.  Mount scored the first eight points of the half to tie the game at 31-31, with Robinson contributing five points and Long hitting a three.  After a layup by Braxton, Long hit another three.  Blackmon tied the game back up with a free throw to make it 34-34, but Wilson hit back-to-back threes and a layup before Robinson hit a three.  A free throw by Nebo was followed by a pair of layups from Wray to give Mount a 49-35 advantage with 9:42 to play.
 
The Red Flash cut the deficit to single-digits with a layup by Gaskins and a pull-up three by Blackmon to cut the Mount lead to 49-40.  A layup by Wray was answered by two free throws by Blackmon to maintain a nine-point deficit.
 
However, Mount pushed its lead back to double-digits when Robinson hit three straight free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt.  Wilson added two free throws on the next Mount possession to push the lead back to 14, 56-42, with 5:44 left.  Mount maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the game. 
 
Angelou, a senior, scored eight of SFU's final 13 points, with two threes and a layup, with a Blackmon three and a Nebo dunk closing out the scoring.
