LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Saint Francis softball team swept its doubleheader over Bucknell on Tuesday at Becker Field. The Red Flash earned a 3-2 win in eight innings in the first game and a 7-2 win in the second game. SFU swept Bucknell for the first time since 2012. Bucknell is now 21-10 this season.
Saint Francis improved to 31-9 overall and has won 19 of its last 20 games. SFU is just three wins away from tying the school-record, set last season.
Going for four innings in game two,
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) earned the win. It was DeVries' eighth this season and the 46th of her career. With the win, she broke a tie with Laura Caldwell (2006-09) for first all-time at Saint Francis.
With four steals on the day, the Red Flash is now tied for the school-record, set by the 2014 team, with 73. SFU is just 12 steals away from tying the NEC season record, set by UMBC in 1999 and 2000.
The Red Flash returns to conference play this weekend with NEC series against Robert Morris and Mount St. Mary's. SFU hosts Robert Morris on Friday for a Noon doubleheader and visits Mount St. Mary's on Saturday for a 2 p.m. twinbill.
First Game
Freshman
Abby Trahan (Kaplan, La./Kaplan) picked up her 12th win of the year with a complete-game performance in game one. Trahan threw eight innings, allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits. She struck out three batters, while walking none. Trahan only let more than one batter on base in two of the eight innings.
Bucknell's Raeanne Geffert also threw a complete game, but fell to 12-5 on the season. In eight innings, Geffert gave up three runs, one earned, on seven hits, with five strikeouts and a walk.
The Red Flash offense produced three runs on seven hits. Sophomore
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) and junior
Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) each went two-for-four with an RBI. Norton had an RBI Single, while Cabell had a go-ahead RBI double in the eighth inning. Sophomore
Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) and freshman
Halle Marion (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) each had a hit and a run, while senior
Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) had a base knock.
Junior Paulina Gutkin produced Bucknell's only RBI of the game. Sophomore Anna Gimmestad and senior Christina Martinez each had a hit and a run.
The Red Flash got on the board with two runs in the top of the third. Marion led off the inning with a single up the middle. Marion stole second before junior
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) drew a walk to put two runners on base. Norton sent the first pitch of her at-bat through the right side to allow Marion to score from second and Seneca to go to third. With Cabell batting, Norton broke for second, with the throw from the catcher sailing into center field, allowing Seneca to cross the plate. Saint Francis led 2-0 after the inning.
Bucknell answered with a run in the bottom of the third. With runners on the corners, and one out, the Bison attempted a double steal. Witthus threw out the Bucknell runner at second, but Christina Martinez scored from third after reaching on an error earlier in the inning. SFU held a 2-1 lead after three innings.
The Bison tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Gutkin hit a sac fly to center to allow Gimmestad to score from third.
The Red Flash re-took the lead in the top of the eighth. As part of extra innings,
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) was placed on second base to start the inning. With two outs, Cabell laced a double off the wall in center, allowing McKee to cross the plate and give SFU a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Bucknell's Ryanne Rokos was placed on second to start the frame. After being sacrificed to third, Rokos attempted to go home on a groundball to Seneca at short. Seneca threw it home to cut down the runner and save the lead.
Second Game
Senior
Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) started game two for the Red Flash. Santai threw three innings, allowing just one run on three hits. Santai struck out two batters and did not walk a batter. Fellow senior
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) replaced Santai in the fourth inning. DeVries went four innings to earn her eighth win of the year. DeVries gave up an unearned run on three hits. She struck out two batters and walked three.
Senior Lara Bean got the start in the circle for Bucknell. Bean gave up seven runs, all unearned, on five hits, with two strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Lauren Lichtenwalner threw 5.1 scoreless innings in relief, allowing only seven hits, and struck out one batter.
Saint Francis collected seven runs on 12 hits. Cabell led the way, going four-for-four with an RBI and a run. Sophomore
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) and Norton each had two hits, an RBI and a run, while Seneca drove in two runs.
Bucknell tallied two runs on six hits. Sophomore Lauren Hadley had a triple and scored a run, while Gimmestad had a double. Gutkin had two hits and junior Meghan Kovac had a base hit, with an RBI, and scored a run.
The Red Flash jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Cabell and S.McKee hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. After
Mikayla Bower (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) drew a two-out walk to load the bases, Witthus reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, which allowed Cabell and McKee to score and put runners on second and third for C. McKee, who then drew a walk to load the bases.
Seneca then fisted an inside pitch into left for a two-run single, with Witthus and Bower scoring. Norton followed with a single through the right side to plate Witthus from second. Cabell then lined a base hit to right to bring home Bower. A single up the middle by S. McKee allowed Norton to score from second and give SFU a seven-run advantage.
Bucknell got a run back in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Lauren Hadley led off the inning with a triple to left. Junior Meghan Kovac followed with a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Hadley and cut the SFU lead to 7-1.
The Bison added another run in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded, freshman Julienne Egofske hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Kovac from third.
