LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis Softball team improved to 6-0 in conference play with a sweep over Robert Morris on Friday. The Red Flash won the first game, 7-2, and battled back to win the second game, 10-6.
The Red Flash is now 33-9 this season, just one win away from the program-record, set last season. Saint Francis has won 21 of its last 22 games, with its only loss during that stretch coming in extra innings.
Saint Francis has won its first six games to start in NEC play for the first time in program history. SFU is off to its best start in conference play since the 1998 team started 7-0-1.
The Red Flash collected three steals on the day, bringing its season-total to 76. That is a new program-record, breaking a tie with the mark set by the 2014 team.
Junior
Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) drove in three runs on the day, giving her 120 career RBI. She is now tied with Kara Stroup (2006-09) for second all-time at Saint Francis.
With one run today, senior
Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) now has 98 for her career, moving her into a tie with Stacy Scofield (2000-03) for fifth place all-time at SFU.
The Red Flash travels to Mount St. Mary's on Saturday for another NEC doubleheader, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Our Lady Of The Meadows Field. Mount is 14-21 this season, including 4-2 in the NEC, after splitting it series against Central Connecticut State on Friday.
First Game
Senior
Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) started game one for the Red Flash. Santai picked up her 11th win of the year by firing four shutout innings. She allowed just two hits and walked one batter, while striking out three. The senior retired eight straight batters at one point and allowed only two runners to reach second. Freshman
Abby Trahan (Kaplan, La./Kaplan) replaced Santai to start the fifth inning. Trahan earned her second save of the season, throwing three innings. She gave up two runs, both unearned, on four hits and a walk. Trahan struck out four batters.
Sophomore Kaitlin Ellzy pitched a complete game, going six innings, but fell to 5-4 on the year. Ellzy gave up seven runs, two earned, on five hits. She struck out three and walked five batters.
Cabell drove in two runs to lead the Red Flash offense, which had seven runs on five hits. Sophomore
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois), sophomore
Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) and Witthus each drove in a run and scored a run.
Senior Stacey Capp had three hits to lead the RMU offense, which plated two runs on six hits. Capp had a double and a run. Sophomore Abrielle McCartney doubled and scored a run, while sophomore Taylor Bartlow drove in a run.
The Red Flash jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the second. After a walk by S. McKee and a single by
Taylor Hoover (Phillipsburg, Ohio/Northmont), Troxell hit a line drive to center to allow McKee to score. Two batters later, Witthus drew a walk to load the bases for
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois), who then drew a walk to score Troxell from third. A couple batter later,
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed
Halle Marion (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) to cross the plate. Cabell then lined a shot to center to plate two more runs, with Witthus and C. McKee scoring. S. McKee reached on an infield single to bring home SFU's last run of the inning, with Norton crossing the plate.
Saint Francis added a run in the bottom of the third. Troxell drew a walk to leadoff the inning. Pinch-runner
Kelsie Marconi (Lowber, Pa./Yough) then stole second and went to third on a wild throw by the catcher. Witthus then lined a single to right to plate Marconi and extend SFU's lead to 7-0.
The Colonials scored two runs in the top of the sixth. With runners on second and third, Natalie Higgins reached on a throwing error, which allowed Capp to score from third. Two batters later, Bartlow lined a single to left to plate McCartney, who reached on a double earlier in the inning. The Red Flash held a 7-2 advantage going to the bottom of the sixth.
Second Game
Senior
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) started the second game for the Red Flash. She threw a total of three innings, re-entering the game with one out in the seventh inning. DeVries allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits. She struck out one batter and walked a batter. Senior
Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) improved to 12-1 on the season, throwing four innings. She gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits and did not walk a batter. Santai struck out one hitter.
Freshman Madison Riggle threw four innings for the Colonials, allowing five runs on four hits and three walks. She struck out one batter. Ellzy pitched a third of an inning, giving up four runs on three hits and a walk. Sophomore Laura Coulter threw 1.2 innings, allowing a run, a hit, a walk and striking out one.
Norton led the Red Flash offense in the second game with four RBI, on a double and a three-run homer, her 11th homer of the season. Troxell hit a two-run homer, her third of the season, and Cabell added a solo homer, her third of the year. Sophomore
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) and Hoover each had an RBI double, while S. McKee had a double and scored two runs.
The Colonials took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. With one out, Katie Isenberg hit a solo homer to left. Two batters later, Capp sent a line drive to center to score Jordan Gurganus, who reached on a single. With runners on the corners, the Colonials attempted a double steal. The runner was caught stealing at second, but Capp crossed the plate.
Saint Francis cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth. S. McKee laced a two-out double to right center. Hoover followed with a single up the middle to bring McKee home.
The Red Flash exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth, including three home runs. Marion and C. McKee drew walks before Seneca sent a line drive to the wall in left for a double. Norton then blasted a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left for a three-run shot. Cabell then made it back-to-back homers with her solo shot to right center. After a pitching change, S. McKee was hit by a pitch and Hoover drove a ball to the gap in left center to bring home another run. Troxell followed with a two-run homer to left to extend SFU's lead to 9-3.
Saint Francis added another run in the bottom of the sixth. C. McKee led off the inning with a walk. Two batters later, Norton doubled to center to drive in McKee and give SFU a 10-3 advantage.
The Colonials rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh. Natalie Higgins led off the inning with a homer to left center. Two batters later, Kristen Pray hit a solo homer to right field. Later in the inning, Capp lined a single to left to drive in Isenberg. However, the RMU threat ended after a wild throw by DeVries went to the backstop, but Witthus threw to DeVries to tag out the runner at the plate.
