Red Flash Battle Two Top-20 Teams on Friday

Providence, RI-The Red Flash took on a pair of top-20 teams to start the final weekend of CWPA regular season play for SFU, falling 9-4 to #18 Hartwick and 19-6 to #14 Indiana.

HARTWICK GAME
The Red Flash battled with the #18 Hartwick Hawks, falling 9-4 on Friday afternoon. Emma Aleksandrovic made a couple of big saves early for the Hawks as the Red Flash came out shooting. Following an exclusion called on Tina Bonilla, the Hawks struck first as L.J. Edwards scored to make it 1-0. The Red Flash couldn't convert on an exclusion that was drawn by Kelly Fehr (Erie, Pa/Villa Maria Academy). The Hawks were able to capitalize on their next offensive possession as Lena Kotanchyan made it 2-0 Hartwick. The Hawks offense kept the pressure on in the first quarter, stretching the out to 5-0 in the opening eight minutes.
Hartwick made it 6-0 early in the second on a Tori Wilson goal. The Red Flash offense kept firing but Aleksandrovic stopped the first eight shots she faced including a pair of Aimee Baur (North Wales, Pa/North Penn) attempts on back-to-back exclusions. Hartwick took a 7-0 lead into the second half. Kotanchyan made it 8-0 with her third of the game. Moments later, the Flash nearly got on the board as Tina Bonilla hit the post with a shot and despite a flurry of three shots, came away empty on the possession. SFU got on the board on their next possession as Kelly Fehr (Erie, Pa/Villa Maria Academy) scored on a Tina Bonilla feed. Hartwick would add a power-play goal late in the third as it was 9-1 heading into the fourth. A Kate Wilke (Burbank, Calif./Burroughs) save sparked the SFU transition offense that was capped by a Kelsey Gring (Sinking Spring, Pa/Wilson) goal to make it 9-2. A pair of steals by Fehr and Wilke prompted a Red Flash timeout. Out of the break, Krysta Ponek (Panama City Beach, Fla./Arnold (Utica College)) converted on a pass from Amber Rogers (Souderton, Pa/Souderton). Rogers backed up her assist with a steal later in the quarter that led to a penalty foul drawn by Lani Merrill (San Clemente, Calif. /San Clemente (Saddleback College)). She converted the penalty shot to make it a 9-4 game. Rogers added two late steals but the Red Flash could not find the net again in the period and fell to the #18 Hawks.

The two teams each had 23 shots, with Kate Wilke (Burbank, Calif./Burroughs) making seven saves for the Red Flash. Aleksandrovic made 13 saves for the Hawks, who are now 19-9 overall and 3-2 in the CWPA. The loss drops SFU to 10-16 overall and 0-5 in the CWPA.

INDIANA GAME
The Hoosiers got on the board early in the Friday nightcap as Kelly Matthews scored on the Hoosiers' opening possession. It became 2-0 after Kelly Fehr (Erie, Pa/Villa Maria Academy) was sent off on an exclusion and IU capitalized on the ensuing power play. Sarah Myers then helped on one goal and scored another to make it 4-0 Indiana in the first. The Flash got one back as Kelly Fehr (Erie, Pa/Villa Maria Academy) drew an exclusion and Missy McCreary (Altadena, CA/LaSalle (Citrus College)) cashed in on the power play. On the Hoosiers next possession, Tina Bonilla was called for a penalty foul that the Hoosiers converted on to make it 5-1. Emily Wickenheiser (Mechanicsburg, Pa/Cumberland Valley) scored her first goal of the day to make it 5-2 but Indiana added two more at the end of quarter to lead 7-2 after one.
A pair of saves by Jessica Gaudrault kept SFU off the scoreboard early in the second quarter. The Hoosiers would use those stops to fuel their transition offense as Indiana would extend the lead to 12-2 at the half. The Hoosiers would make it 13-2 in the third as they scored on the power play but Kelsey Gring (Sinking Spring, Pa/Wilson) would respond, putting home a Aimee Baur (North Wales, Pa/North Penn) pass on the next Red Flash possession. Baur would draw an exclusion later in the quarter and out of an SFU timeout, Wickenheiser scored her second of the game on the powerplay. The Hoosiers would add a late goal in the third and one at the start of the fourth before Kelly Fehr (Erie, Pa/Villa Maria Academy) would draw a penalty foul. Lani Merrill (San Clemente, Calif. /San Clemente (Saddleback College)) cashed in on her second penalty shot of the game for SFU's fifth tally. McCreary would add another power play goal, her second of the day to round out the SFU scoring.
Indiana outshot SFU 30-15 but the Red Flash cashed in on three of their six power play opportunities. Kate Wilke (Burbank, Calif./Burroughs) was credited with four saves and a steal in the match. McCreary and Wickenheiser paced the offense with two goals apiece, while McCreary and Rogers each had two steals.
The Red Flash now sit at 10-17 overall and 0-6 in CWPA play. They will take on Harvard and the host Brown Bears tomorrow afternoon.
