BLOOMINGTON, IND- The Saint Francis Red Flash finished eighth in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) tournament after dropping a 12-3 decision to Brown on Sunday morning in the seventh-place game.Â
Kelly Fehr (Erie, Pa/Villa Maria Academy) capped off a phenomenal tournament with her eighth goal in Sunday's game, giving her 69 for her freshman season.
Kate Wilke (Burbank, Calif./Burroughs)Â ended her freshman season leading the defense with five saves and a steal.Â
Brown scored first on Sunday, forcing a turnover and using the transition to score 38 seconds into the match. The lead didn't last long as on SFU's ensuing possession, Fehr scored to tie the match one minute in. The goalies took over midway through the quarter as Wilke and Marisol Dakan each made two saves and had a steal to thwart the attack. Brown made it 2-1, again scoring in transition off a Red Flash turnover. SFU couldn't convert on a late power play and Brown would lead 2-1 after the first quarter.Â
The Bears would capitalize on a power play to start the second quarter and extended the lead out to 3-1. The Red Flash ran into a bit of bad luck when
Emily Wickenheiser (Mechanicsburg, Pa/Cumberland Valley)Â hit the post at one end and was called for a penalty foul on the other, the Bears converted the penalty shot to take a three-goal lead. SFU would draw an exclusion but the bad luck continued as
Kelsey Gring (Sinking Spring, Pa/Wilson) hit the post on the power play and Brown came down and scored on their next possession. The Bears would lead 6-1 at the half.Â
An exclusion on the Red Flash carried over into the third quarter and Brown capitalized after winning the opening sprint. Wickenheiser got one back for the Red Flash, scoring on a power play to make it 7-2. Wilke then stopped a penalty shot but the Bears would capitalize on another power play less than a minute later. SFU would fight off another penalty but couldn't solve Dakan down the stretch in the third as the Bears' net minder made two saves and had a steal to keep it 8-2 heading into the fourth.Â
Brown again won the opening sprint but both defenses would force turnovers to start the fourth. The Bears scored on consecutive possessions after the defense forced turnovers to make it 10-2. Tina Bonilla wrapped up the scoring for SFU, putting away a
Melani Aghazarian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale (La Valley College)) feed. The Flash would keep attacking but a trio of late saves by new Brown goalie Lauren Burns kept it a 12-3 game and final.Â
Brown out shot SFU 24-17 and 17-10 in shots on goal. The loss ends SFU's season with an eighth-place finish in the CWPAÂ and an 11-22 overall record highlighted by their comeback 11-10 win over George Washington to start the CWPA tournament.
