LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis softball team snapped its 15-game win streak on Wednesday, falling 8-3 in nine innings against Pittsburgh in its home opener. A two-run homer by
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) sent the game into extra innings, but the Panthers tallied five runs in the top of the ninth to earn the win. The Red Flash is now 27-9 overall, while Pitt improved to 18-16.
Senior
Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) started for the Red Flash, and re-entered the game with two outs in the ninth, for a total of 3.2 innings. She allowed two runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out four batters. Senior
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) entered with one out in the top of the fourth and threw five innings, giving up three runs on four hits and four walks, while striking out three. DeVries suffered the loss and is now 7-5 this season. Freshman
Abby Trahan (Kaplan, La./Kaplan) threw a third of an inning, allowing three runs, one earned, on a hit and a walk, with one strikeout.
Freshman Brittany Knight started in the circle for the Panthers. She allowed a run on three hits and three walks, with three strikeouts, in four innings. Junior Kayla Harris pitched the final five innings, picking up her eighth win of the season, and gave up two runs on three hits and four walks, with three strikeouts.
Seneca hit her 16th home run of the season, just two shy of her SFU season-record set last year. Today's homer was a two-run shot, giving her 121 for her career, setting a new all-time record at Saint Francis. Seneca passed Kara Stroup (120, 2006-09) for first all-time. Seneca already held the school's career home runs, walks and runs records. Seneca also drew three walks on the day.
Junior
Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) hit her second home run of the season during a two-for-three day, which included a single and two walks. Sophomore
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) went two-for-four, with a run and freshman
Taylor Hoover (Phillipsburg, Ohio/Northmont) collected a base hit.
Sophomore Olivia Gray knocked in two runs, including a solo homer, on two hits. Junior McKayla Taylor added a solo homer, while freshman Alexee Haynes contributed two hits, including an RBI double.
The Panthers got on the board first, on a double to left by Haynes in the top of the third, plating Erin Hershman from second.
Pitt extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth as Gray blasted one over the wall in right center.
The Red Flash answered with a solo homer by Cabell to lead off the bottom of the fourth. Cabell sent a fly ball to right center that just cleared the fence for her second of the season. SFU trailed 2-1 after four innings.
Taylor led off the top of the seventh with a homer to left to give the Panthers a 3-1 advantage.
McKee drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Seneca followed by sending a laser shot over the right field wall to tie the game at 3-3.
The Panthers re-took the lead with five runs in the top of the ninth. With runners on first and third, Pitt's Taylor Myers dropped down a bunt on the third base line.
Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) tried to scoop up the ball and flip it to home, but the throw was too late as Hershman scored. After a walk drawn by Alexis Solak loaded the bases, Gray was hit by a pitch to score Valerie Ortega. An infield single by Kaitlin Manuel allowed Myers to score. Girogiana Zeremenko reached on an error, with Solak scoring, and Taylor was hit by a pitch, allowing Gray to score, to finish out the inning.
The Red Flash hosts LIU Brooklyn on Saturday in a re-match of last year's top two NEC teams. A doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m., with a broadcast on NEC Front Row.
