BOSTON – The Saint Francis men's volleyball team downed Harvard,3-2, on Friday night in EIVA action at Dillon Fieldhouse. The Flash won 20-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16 and 15-13.
Saint Francis improves to 7-4 in conference play while Harvard falls to 6-5 in the EIVA.
Michael Fisher (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley (Pepperdine)) led the Flash with 19 kills.
Stephen Braswell (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) finished second on the squad with 15 kills and hit .438 while
Jeff Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria) recorded 13.
Daniel Ford (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) contributed with 47 assists while
Keith Kegerreis (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) added seven blocks.
Gabe Woffindin (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) chipped in with 14 digs. Casey White led Harvard with a team-high 13 kills.
Saint Francis started the fifth set on fire, opening up on a 4-0 lead. With the Red Flash leading 5-3, the Crimson rifled off five unanswered points to take an 8-5 advantage. Out of a Saint Francis timeout, SFU scored five of the next six points to tie the set at 11-11. Two Harvard attack errors and a Hogan kill ended the set and match, 15-13.
Tied at 5-5 in the opening set, two Harvard attack errors and a Hogan service ace gave SFU an 8-5 lead. With Saint Francis leading 10-6, the Crimson rattled off four straight points to tie the set at 10-10. After two Harvard miscues, Saint Francis took a 13-11 lead. However, the Flash lead was short lived as the Crimson went on a 6-2 run to hold a 17-15 advantage. A
Tony Nicotra (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes) kill trimmed the Harvard lead to one, 18-19, but the Crimson answered with four answered point to put the set out of reach.
Saint Francis pulled out to a 4-2 lead in the second set off the strength of two Fisher kills. Back-to-back kills from Braswell extended the Flash advantage to 8-5. Kills from Casey White and Riley Moore and a SFU attack error knotted the set at 8-all. Four-straight Crimson errors gave the Flash a 13-9 lead. Harvard responded by scoring six of the next seven point to tie the set at 14-14. Kills from Braswell, Fisher and
Keith Kegerreis (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) put the Flash ahead, 17-14. Saint Francis took the set 25-21 after a Harvard attack error.
To start the set third, Harvard jumped out to a 10-6 lead. The Crimson lead as many as seven, 20-14, but the Red Flash cut the deficit two three, 17-20. A Kegerreis kill made it a one-point set, 22-23 in favor of Harvard. A Trevor Dow gave the Crimson the third set, 25-23.
The Red Flash pulled out to a commanding 6-2 lead in the fourth set to cause a Harvard timeout. SFU's stretched its lead to 20-10, and never looked back as the Flash rolled to a 25-16 victory to force a fifth and deciding set.
Saint Francis returns to action tomorrow against Sacred Heart at 7 p.m.
