Red Flash Grind Out OT Win vs Mount

FLASH POINTS
  • Kyasia Duling (Zanesville, Ohio/New Albany (Duquesne)) had a career high 16 points in the win
  • SFU put four players in double figures, led by Kroll's 27
  • The Red Flash got 23 points off of 22 Mount turnovers
  • Neither team led by more than nine and there were 16 lead changes
 
 
LORETTO, PA- The Red Flash needed overtime but got a balanced offensive effort to outlast Mount Saint Mary's and grind out a 92-88 overtime win on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mount's Daly Sullivan hit six threes, none bigger than a wild bank shot with three seconds left in regulation that forced overtime after Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg)'s mid-court prayer fell short. Kovatch, who battled foul trouble all game, scored 10 of her 19 points in the extra frame including a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left that essentially sealed the game for the Red Flash.
 
FIRST QUARTER RECAP
  • After missing their first three, the Mount hit on six of their next seven threes in the quarter
  • Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) picked up two personal fouls in the opening three minutes of play
  • Karson Swogger (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) hit a three to put SFU up 14-13 but Mount answered with six straight
  • Daly Sullivan hit a pair of threes to spark a 8-0 Mount run to give them their biggest lead at 29-20
  • A Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport) lay-in cut the Mount lead to five at 29-24 at the end of the first quarter
 
SECOND QUARTER RECAP
  • The run for the Flash continued into the second as a Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) lay-in cut the Mount lead to one and capped a 8-0 run
  • Mount St. Mary's answered with 7-0 run of their own to open back a eight-point lead at 36-28
  • A Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) three and two lay-ins from Kroll cut the Mount lead to one at 38-37
  • A three-point play by the Mount's Caroline Hummell put the Mountaineers up four and a Wynn three went begging at the buzzer
  • Mount led 41-37 heading into the locker room
 
THIRD QUARTER RECAP
  • Jumpers by Kroll and Harrison quickly tied the game for the Red Flash at 43 all
  • Kovatch picked up her fourth foul with over eight minutes left in the quarter
  • The momentum swings continued with the Mount building a six-point lead only to see a 6-0 run by SFU follow, capped by to Leah Morrow (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Africentric) free throws to tie the game at 51
  • A three by Kyasia Duling (Zanesville, Ohio/New Albany (Duquesne)) helped SFU build their largest lead of the game at 59-54
  • Again, the Mount answered with five straight points to re-tie the game
  • Harrison followed up a Kroll miss with a put-back to put SFU up 61-59 at the end of three
 
FOURTH QUARTER RECAP
  • A Harrison steal-and-score ended a 4-0 run for the Flash to start the quarter to give them their largest lead at 65-59
  • Mount St. Mary's again answered to tie the game at 65 on a Kayla Agentowicz three pointer
  • The teams traded baskets over the next three minutes, with neither team leading by more than two
  • A Daly Sullivan three answered a pair of Kovatch free throws and gave the Mount a 75-74 lead with a minute remaining
  • Kovatch answered with a highlight reel three where she banked an inbounds pass off a defender's back and drained a corner three
  • A Kyasia Duling (Zanesville, Ohio/New Albany (Duquesne)) block led to Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) splitting a pair of free throws to put SFU up 78-75
  • After a missed three, Ashlee White stole a Duling pass and found Sullivan for the wild banked three that forced overtime
  • The teams went to the extra frame tied at 78
 
OVERTIME RECAP
  • The teams traded baskets for the first two minutes of overtime
  • A Kovatch three put SFU up 83-82 only to see the Mount answer with a three-point play on the ensuing possession
  • The junior continued to take over the overtime with a driving lay-up that gave SFU a 87-85 lead with 90 seconds left
  • After the Mount tied the game at 87, Kovatch hit another three to give the Red Flash a 90-87 lead
  • Fatigue set in late for both teams with SFU missing a pair of free throws and Mount St. Mary's going 1-4 from the line inside the final minute
  • Kovatch got a big offensive rebound off a Duling missed free throw and calmly sank two of her own to put SFU up 92-88
  • A late Mount turnover sealed it as Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport) picked off a pass and dribbled out the clock
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Mount St. Mary's shot 50 percent from three, hitting on 14 of 28 attempts, compared to SFU going 7-29
  • The Red Flash did their damage inside with a 44-28 edge on points in the paint and 19-11 on second-chance points
  • The Red Flash won the rebound battle 53-45 with Duling's 13 boards and Harrison's 12 leading the way
  • SFU forced 22 more turnovers, thanks in part to 14 steals, leading to 23 points off turnovers and 25 points in transition
  • Both teams had four players in double figures with Hummell's 21 points leading Mount and Kroll's 27 for SFU leading all scorers
  • SFU improves to 2-0 in overtime games this season, having knocked off Portland 106-101 in double OT in December
