Four in Double Figures in SFU Sweep

TEANECK, NJ- Saint Francis got double-doubles from Nicole Adams (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa East) and Madi Tyus (Plano, TX/Bishop Lynch) and four players had 10 or more kills as the Red Flash swept the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights on Saturday night at Stratis Arena.
 
 
The Red Flash improved to 3-4 in the NEC after a 25-15, 28-26, 25-18 victory over the Knights.
 
BOX SCORE LEADERS
 
Nicole Adams (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa East), Alexis Lambert (McKinney, Tx./McKinney-Boyd) and Madi Tyus (Plano, TX/Bishop Lynch) all had 14 kills while Sophia Esposito (Coraopolis, PA/Montour (Gardner-Webb)) added 10 of her own against just one error. As a team the Red Flash hit an even 300, a season high. Defensively, Tyus added 15 digs for her double-double while Adams added 13 and Jess Barrett (Broadview Heights, OH/North Royalton) 12. Esposito added three block assists.
 
For FDU, Erika Sullivan had a team high 11 kills while Jaelyn Young paced the defense with 13 digs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST SET RECAP
  • Tyus had the hot hand early, recording a kill and an ace as SFU jumped out to a 5-1 lead
  • The Red Flash would steadily build the lead as kills from Adams and Lambert pushed the lead to six at 12-6
  • SFU would never let FDU back in the set, an ace from Jess Barrett (Broadview Heights, OH/North Royalton) quieted a FDU run to push the lead to 16-10
  • A trio of FDU errors would push the lead out to eight and SFU cruised to the first set win from there
  • Lambert and Esposito closed out the set with back-to-back kills as SFU took set one with a 25-15 win
 
SECOND SET RECAP
  • FDU got off to the quick start this time, scoring the first four points of the set
  • A trio of kills from Adams got the Red Flash going as they chipped away at the Knights' lead
  • An Esposito kill capped a 3-0 run to give SFU their first lead of the set at 9-8
  • The teams would trade points across the set, with 11 ties in the set, neither team was able to get separation
  • FDU looked to take control of the set, re-taking a three-point lead at 22-19 off a pair of SFU errors
  • Out of a SFU timeout, kills from Tyus and Adams and an ace from Metzler tied the set at 22
  • Nicole Adams (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa East) fought off a set point with a kill to tie the set back up at 24 and did it again at 25
  • After FDU staved off one set point of their own, kills from Lambert and Esposito finished off the set, 28-26 in favor of the Red Flash
 
THIRD SET RECAP
  • The Knights again took an early lead in the third set, forcing the Red Flash to play catchup
  • A kill and a block from Esposito helped erase the Knights' 5-2 lead as SFU scored five-straight to take the lead
  • SFU would continue to grow the lead as Tyus got hot again with a trio of kills to push the lead to six
  • The Red Flash never let the Knights back into the set, getting kills from Tyus and later from Esposito each time FDU would get within five
  • Esposito would get the Red Flash on the doorstep of a sweep and after two FDU points, Adams closed out the match with a kill
 
Saint Francis makes the turn into the second half of the Northeast Conference slate at 3-4. The Red Flash is back at home next weekend to host Central Connecticut and Bryant on homecoming weekend. Bryant is up first with a 7 p.m. first serve set for Friday night from DeGol Arena.
