Game Recap: Football |

Red Flash downed by CCSU, 30-14

LORETTO, PA- The Saint Francis football team honored 20 seniors as well as the band, cheer and dance team on Saturday but Central Connecticut State used a fourth quarter turnover as a springboard to a 30-14 victory at DeGol Field on a cold, blustery day at DeGol Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST QUARTER RECAP
  • Saint Francis took the ball to start the game and sophomore Joel Denley (Beaumont, Texas/West Brook) provided an early rushing spark with a pair of first downs.
  • After the SFU opening drive stalled, junior Da'Jon Lee (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) sacked Jacob Dolegala to immediately stall the CCSU drive.
  • Senior Jymere Jordan-Toney (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin) got the Red Flash rush going with a pair of first down runs including a 20-yard jaunt.
  • Senior Bear Fenimore (Austin, Texas/Westwood) hit senior Kam Lewis for a first down and junior Cyrus Holder (Uniondale, N.Y./Milford Academy) drew a pass interference to set up a goal-to-go situation.
  • Fenimore hit Lewis again, this time on a two-yard slant for the game's first TD.
  • Tailback Aaron Dawson got going for CCSU and a trio of first-down runs got the Blue Devils into the red zone as the quarter expired.

SECOND QUARTER RECAP
  • The Red Flash defense nearly made a goal-line stand but Dawson powered in from two-yards out on fourth down early in the quarter to tie the score.
  • The ensuing SFU drive stalled and CCSU pulled out some trickery on its next drive, faking a reverse and hitting tight end Arthur Gilmore for 47 yards and a touchdown.
  • Jordan-Toney fumbled the ball on a cutback on the next Red Flash drive. CCSU recovered at the SFU 7, setting up a first-and-goal.
  • The #darkside forced a turnover after CCSU faked a field goal and Dolegala's pass fell incomplete.
  • Neither team was able to sustain a drive after the turnover with the teams trading punts the rest of the half.
  • CCSU led 14-7 at the break.

THIRD QUARTER RECAP
  • After the Red Flash forced a three-and-out on the opening drive of the half, Denley took a Fenimore pass 26 yards and had an 11-yard rush to push SFU into Blue Devil territory.
  • After the SFU drive stalled, a perfectly executed jailbreak screen by CCSU broke Drew Jean-Guillaume for 87 yards and a score to put CCSU up 21-7.
  • The teams continued to trade punts after the CCSU score until senior linebacker Ben Bruni (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) recovered an errant option pitch to set up SFU at the CCSU 34.
  • A roughing the passer penalty and a Nick Rinella (Collegeville, Pa./La Salle College) wildcat rush put SFU deep in CCSU territory.
  • Jymere Jordan-Toney (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin) converted a big fourth down to set up a goal-to-go situation.

FOURTH QUARTER RECAP
  • Kam Lewis took a swing pass on the first play of the quarter in from five yards out for his second score of the game and made it 21-14 CCSU.
  • Senior Hakeem Kinard (York, Pa./York Catholic) picked off Jacob Dolegala on CCSU's next drive, giving SFU the ball at midfield
  • Fenimore found Lewis again on third down to move Lewis over 100 yards for the 14th time in his career and moving Lewis to third on the NEC all-time receiving yards list.
  • After hitting redshirt sophomore Zach Campbell (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) to set up a goal-to-go situation, Fenimore was picked off in the end zone by DJ Exilhomme who returned it out to the CCSU 30.
  • Aaron Dawson rushed for a pair of first downs and SFU forced a fumble by Ben Bruni (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) but CCSU recovered to continue the drive.
  • Jacob Dolegala rolled 20 yards on a qb keeper to set up a goal-to-go and Aaron Dawson punched it in to give CCSU a 28-14 lead.
  • After trading punts, CCSU forced a safety after Bear Fenimore (Austin, Texas/Westwood) was called for grounding in the end zone.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • CCSU outgained SFU 332-238 for the game.
  • The Red Flash won the ball control battle running 73 plays to CCSU's 56. First downs favored the Red Flash 18-13.
