Loretto, PA - Saint Francis women's basketball (1-3) returns to the hardwood when it hosts in-state foe Duquesne on Sunday at 2 p.m. Anyone that brings in a canned good or non-perishable item will receive free admission to the game. All proceed from the food drive will benefit the Catholic Charities of Altoona. All other tickets to the game will be ten dollars.
Scouting Duquesne
Duquesne returns all five starters from last season's team and was selected to finish first in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Seniors Chassidy Omogrosso and Julijana Vojinovic were both named to the Preseason All-Conference First Team. Laia Sole leads the Dukes in scoring this season with 10.5 points per game, while Sole and Kadri-Ann Lass pace the Dukes with 5.3 rebounds per contest. Omogrosso leads the team with 2.8 assists per clip.
Duquesne has faced a challenging schedule to open the season as the Dukes fell in the season-opener at TCU, 61-48. Duquesne then dropped a 78-41 decision at No. 11 Texas, 78-41, before picking up a 73-64 win over NEC opponent Mount St. Mary's. The Dukes fell on the road at Toledo last Sunday, 65-52. Lass was the only Dukes player to score in double-figures against the Rockets with ten points. Amanda Kalin set a career-high with eight rebounds, while Omogrosso had a team-high four assists.
Swogger Finding her Swagger
Saint Francis sophomore guard Karson Swogger (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) was red-hot for the Red Flash in the first half against Seton Hill. The Bellwood, Pa. native scored 17 points on 4-of-5 from behind the three-point arc, while adding six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Williams Sets Career-high
SFU graduate forward Aunesha Williams (Miami, FL/McEachern (Morgan State)) set a career-high in scoring against the Griffins with 17 points. She was 8-of-15 shooting from the floor and tied her career-high in rebounds with nine boards.
Kovatch Raising the Bar
Saint Francis senior guard Jess Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) has started to find her scoring touch for the Red Flash. The Phillipsburg, N.J. native scored a season-high 20 points in the win over Seton Hill. Kovatch continues to climb the record books as she now ranks second all-time in scoring at SFU with 2,219 career points. She trails Jess Zinobile by 119 points for first place all-time.
Facing the Dukes
Saint Francis has a 10-29 all-time record against Duquesne. The Dukes have won the last eight contests with the Red Flash's last win coming on Nov. 27, 2007.
