BROOKLYN, NY- The Red Flash withstood the St. Francis Brooklyn's hot-shooting and outscored the Terriers 40-17 over the final 14 minutes in a 94-71 win on Saturday afternoon.
 
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) had 27 points on 10-17 shooting to lead all scorers but got hampered by foul trouble and had just four after half. Enter Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport), who scored 15 of her 19 after the break to lead the offensive charge.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Red Flash responded to the Terriers taking a 60-59 lead with a 20-2 run to put the game out of reach. The hot shooting terriers shot just 28 percent in the fourth quarter after shooting over 50 percent over the first three quarters. SFU won the fourth quarter 28-11 to pull away.
 
 
FIRST QUARTER RECAP
  • Brooklyn got out of the gate quick, scoring the game's first five points and seven of the first 10
  • A three-point play by Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) got SFU on the board off a nice pass from Kovatch
  • Lay-ups by Leah Morrow (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Africentric) and Kyasia Duling (Zanesville, Ohio/New Albany (Duquesne)) helped to jump start the offense as SFU got within three at the media timeout
  • A Kovatch backcourt steal led to an easy lay-up and helped give SFU their first lead at 19-18
  • The junior added two more jumpers and Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) added a late bucket as the Red Flash led 25-23 after the first quarter
  • SFU shot 58 percent in the first quarter, but SFBK was lights out, shooting 62 percent
 
SECOND QUARTER RECAP
  • Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport) and Kovatch hit early threes as SFU built their lead to seven right out of the quarter start
  • A Zezza lay-up gave SFU their largest lead of nine and it stretched briefly to 12 as Karson Swogger (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) and Morrow teamed up for a steal and found Kovatch for another three
  • The Terriers answered with a 13-3 run to cut the Red Flash lead down to two at 42-40
  • A late Zezza three capped the quarter and ensured a Red Flash halftime lead
  • SFU led 45-40 at the break
 
THIRD QUARTER RECAP
  • The Terriers quickly tied the game out of the half after SFU came up short on a pair of early threes
  • Kovatch exited with her third foul as Jade Johnson converted a four-point play
  • The junior had a steal and score but was whistled for her fourth foul after review
  • A Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) three re-tied the game after a nice pass from Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort)
  • Harrison had a pair of nice feeds to Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport) who responed with five-straight for SFU
  • Jade Johnson's fifth three of the night gave SFBK back the lead but a pair of buckets by Morrow and Kyasia Duling (Zanesville, Ohio/New Albany (Duquesne)) gave SFU back the lead
  • Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort) found Karson Swogger (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) for a big three as SFU closed strong, on a 7-0 run
  • SFU led 66-60 after three
 
FOURTH QUARTER RECAP
  • Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) started the quarter with a steal and score
  • Zezza and Kroll responded with lay-ups, the latter resulting in a three-point play as the lead grew to 13 and forced a Terrier timeout
  • Leah Morrow (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Africentric) had back-to-back lay-ins to cap an 11-0 run and force another Terrier timeout as SFU opened up a 17-point advantage
  • Swogger answered threes by SFBK with ones of her own to keep the lead steady
  • A Kroll three continued the Red Flash roll as she finished with 19 points 7 rebounds and four assists
  • SFU outscored SFBK 40-17 over the final 14 minutes after the game was tied at 54
  • The Red Flash improved to 10-1 in the NEC with the 94-71 victory
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Red Flash shot 50 percent from the field (37-74), just the second time this season they have shot 50 percent or better (Sacred Heart)
  • SFU forced 25 turnovers and scored 24 points off the miscues, that was fueled by 16 steals, led by Harrison's four
  • Both teams were 13-27 from three, with SFBK's Jade Johnson (5-6) leading all shooters, Johnson led SFBK with 18
  • Saint Francis owned down low out rebounding the Terriers 42-30, with a 19-4 edge on second-chance points and a 42-18 advantage scoring in the paint
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Red Flash stay in Brooklyn and will head to LIU Brooklyn on Monday night. Tip time from the Steinberg Wellness Center is set for 7 p.m.
