SFU set to host FDU in NEC Quarterfinal

The Red Flash (18-11, 12-6 NEC) will host Fairleigh Dickinson (12-17, 9-9 NEC)­ in the 3-6 NEC Quarterfinal Matchup on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m.

The Knights won five of their final seven games to earn the six seed. One of those losses was to Saint Francis last Thursday, a 90-82 win for the Red Flash. Darnell Edge leads the team in scoring at 14.1 ppg. He scored a team-high 21 points in FDU's loss to Saint Francis last week. Mike Holloway is one of the top interior players in the conference and averages 13.4 ppg and a team-high 7.0 rpg. Freshman Jahlil Jenkins was named the NEC Rookie of the Week after averaging 21 points in two games last week, including 20 vs. the Red Flash.

Saint Francis has won the last three meetings and leads the series 48-43. Sophomore Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) averaged 19.5 ppg, 11.5 rpg and 8.0 apg in the two meetings this season, notching a triple-double in the win on Feb. 1.

  • Head coach Rob Krimmel is 4-4 in the NEC Tournament

CALL IT A WINNING STREAK
 
The Red Flash will enter the tournament on a five-game winning streak, its longest since winning five in a row in January of the 2010-11 season. Saint Francis has been fueled by its defense. The Red Flash is allowing 66.8 ppg during the run and is holding its opponents to 39.7% shooting. SFU is averaging 85.2 ppg during the streak. Juniors Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) and Andre Wolford (Willowick, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) and sophomore Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) are averaging a combined 58.4 ppg over the last five.
 
SPECIAL SEASON
 
It has been a special season for the Red Flash despite losing NEC Preseason First Team All-Conference selection Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) for the season in the third game of the year. SFU's 18 overall wins and 12 NEC wins are the most since the 1990-91 championship team went 24-8 and 13-3 in NEC play.
 
PUSHING THE RIGHT BUTTONS
 
Freshman Mark Flagg (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) was inserted into the starting lineup in a home win vs. Sacred Heart on Jan. 28. Since then, the starting combination of Flagg, Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School), Randall Gaskins Jr., Andre Wolford (Willowick, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) and Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) has posted a 6-1 record.
 
HARMON SEVENTH IN ASSISTS
 
Senior Malik Harmon (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) moved into a tie-for-seventh in school history with 323 career assists after posting two in the win over Robert Morris. Harmon is third on the team in assists this season with 71 and has recorded 70 or more assists in all four of his seasons.
