Men's Basketball

Red Flash fall late, 59-56

BOX SCORE Emmitsburg, Md. - Junior Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) scored a team-high 17 points but his game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer was just a little bit long as the Saint Francis men's basketball team (13-10, 7-5 NEC) lost at Mount St. Mary's (13-11, 8-4 NEC), 59-56.

Krimmel's Reaction

"I can't fault the team's effort tonight," said head coach Rob Krimmel. "To hold a team that has as much firepower as Mount St. Mary's to 59 points shows how much this team is improving on the defensive end. Unfortunately, we didn't make shots tonight and that is a recipe for disaster when you face as much zone as we did today."

Turning Point

The Red Flash trailed 55-53 when King knotted the game at 55-55 with a pull-up jumper from the left elbow with 1:58 to play. The Red Flash would get the ball back and King would go to the line after he was fouled rebounding a miss by sophomore Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./The Lawrenceville School). King made the first free throw but missed the second and freshman Mark Flagg (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) was called for a critical offensive foul while going after the rebound. Mount's Greg Alexander made the two ensuing free throws to put the home team ahead 57-56. Saint Francis would get a good look when King found sophomore Randall Gaskins Jr. alone in the corner but his go-ahead three with 14 seconds hit the front rim. Two more Mount St. Mary's free throws led to King's desperation three. The shot was on line from the moment it left his hand but sailed just a little long.

Inside the Box Score
  • Saint Francis shot just 37.7% (20-53) from the field, its second lowest percentage of the season, and the lowest since its second game of the season at San Francisco on Nov. 13. The Mount made 22-48 (45.8%) shots.
  • The main reason for the low shooting percentage was SFU's inability to knock down shots from three-point range. The Red Flash made just 4-22 (18.2%) threes, also its second lowest percentage of the year, and missed its last seven triples, including all six in the second half. The Mountaineers made 8-of-22 (36.4%) of its threes.
  • Saint Francis made 12-15 (80.0%) from the charity stripe to 7-11 (63.6%) for Mount St. Mary's.
  • The Red Flash edged the Mountaineers on the glass, 30-28.
  • All 56 SFU points came from the starting lineup.
  • SFU forced the Mount into 14 turnovers. Braxton led SFU with three steals.
Notes
  • Braxton and junior guard Andre Wolford (Willowick, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) followed King's 17 points with 14 each.
  • Braxton also tied for the team-high in rebounds with freshman Mark Flagg (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury). Each pulled down seven boards.
  • Wolford made four three-pointers to run his season total to 74, the sixth highest mark in SFU single-season history.
  • The score was tied nine times and the lead changed hands 10 times. Saint Francis had the largest lead of the game for any team at 11 with 15:04 to play in the first half, opening the game on a 13-2 run.
