BROOKLYN, NY- Saint Francis hits the road this weekend for a pair of road matches with St. Francis Brooklyn and LIU Brooklyn on Saturday and Monday, respectfully.
First up are the Terriers of St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday, with a 1 p.m. tip off scheduled. The Red Flash will take on LIU Brooklyn on Monday night with a 7 p.m. tip-off.
ABOUT THE RED FLASH
Saint Francis picked up a marquee win last Saturday, out scoring Robert Morris 46-20 in the second half en route to a 68-47 victory over the then un-beaten Colonials to tie them atop the NEC standings at 9-1. The catalyst behind the run was
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), who scored 23 of her 32 after the break including an eye-popping 7-10 from three.
Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and
Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport) added 12 more. The defense was the big key to the win, holding Robert Morris to just 27 percent shooting (after allowing 51 percent in the first meeting) and out rebounding RMU 40-35.
On the year, Kovatch has stolen the headlines, and leads SFU and the NEC in scoring at 24.5 ppg and 29.7 in NEC play. She is flanked by Kroll and Harrison as the trio score in double figures for the Red Flash this season. It's been the defense that has fueled the offense this conference season with the Red Flash averaging a league-best 14 steals a night and nearly six blocks per contest. That has allowed the Red Flash to get out and run, to the tune of 83 points per game in NEC play while forcing nearly 22 turnovers a night. The defense has also led to some high-quality looks for the offense, who is second in the NEC, shooting 42.6 percent in NEC play. Right behind them is Saturday's opponent St. Francis Brooklyn.
ABOUT THE TERRIERS
The Terriers are coming in off a big road win over Mount St. Mary's to move to 5-6 in the NEC on the season. When the teams met in January, Jade Johnson led the team with 16 points and she went for 22 against the Mount in Monday's win. The Flash will also have to keep tabs on Maria Palarino and Mia Ehling, who each shoot over 43 percent from three-point range. Ehling was 4-4 from three against the Red Flash back in January. SFBK also rebounds well, and does so with a wave of rebounders, four players average between four and five boards per game. The Red Flash will try and turn the Terriers over, SFBK has been turnover prone, averaging 17 miscues a night while forcing just 15. SFU forced 22 turnovers in January, leading to 25 points.
ABOUT THE BLACKBIRDS
LIU comes into the weekend tied with their Brooklyn rival at 5-6 in the NEC on the season. SFU defeated LIU 101-71 back in January. The Flash will try to slow down Denisha Petty-Evans and Deangelique Waithe who each have averaged over 15 points per game in NEC play. They went for 17 and 21, respectfully against SFU back in January. The Blackbirds try to slow the game down, they average just 57 points per game in NEC play, while playing stingy defense, allowing just 62 points a night. LIU Brooklyn doesn't hit a lot of threes, when they do it's usually Jeydah Johnson, who's shooting nearly 48 percent from three in NEC play. Petty-Evans leads the team in threes made, averaging about three per game, but is doing so on just 30 percent shooting. The Red Flash will look to dominate the boards as they did in the first meeting, winning the battle 49-41 but grabbing 17 offensive rebounds, leading to a 27-6 edge in second-chance points. The Blackbirds are a league worst -9.4 on the glass in NEC play. SFU will have to watch for LIU attacking the passing lanes, they are second to SFU in steals and swiped eight in the matchup .
