Water Polo Lacerated by Wolverines and Handled by Hawks

Ann Arbor, MI- Your Saint Francis Red Flash water polo team finished the regular season with two conference defeats to nationally ranked Michigan and Hartwick. The Wolverines won 19-2 and the Hawks scratched out an 18-7 victory.

Flash Points
  • Marialena Seletopoulou (Glyfada Athens Greece/Yannopoulos School) scored seven goals to push her over 100 goals for the season. She becomes the first Red Flash player to earn that distinction.
  • The Red Flash completed its second year of CWPA play.
Michigan Summary
  • MIchigan roared out to a 5-0 first period lead as the tenth ranked Wolverines ferociously punished the nets.
  • The second period featured more of the same as Michigan extended its lead to 11-0 by halftime.
  • The Wolverines ran its advantage to 13-0 before the Red Flash scored on a Marialena Seletopoulou (Glyfada Athens Greece/Yannopoulos School) strike. Michigan responded in kind to make it 14-1 entering the fourth period.
  • Seletopoulou scored again but Michigan tacked on five more goals to finish the scoring at 19-2.
Hartwick Summary
  • Against #16 ranked Hartwick, your Red Flash dashed out to a 4-1 first period lead as Seletopoulou scored thrice times and Julia Kreidinger (Erie, Pennsylvania/Villa Maria) added a goal off a Seletopoulou assist.
  • The second period saw a reversal of fortunes as Seletopoulou was dinged with two exclusions, which necessitated her exile to the bench for most of the second period. Hartwick promptly seized advantage of her absence to take a 5-4 halftime lead.
  • Hartwick's fast-paced, mad blitz offense took control of the third period as it wore down the Red Flash defense scoring eight goals to Saint Francis' three tallies.
  • The fourth period proved anti-climatic, as the Red Flash shots would not go into goal and Hartwick scored five times to seal a 18-7 victory that was much closer than the final score would indicate.
Notes
  • Kate Wilke (Burbank, Calif./Burroughs) posted 11 saves against Hartwick. The stat, however, does not do her justice as most of those saves were stopping one-on-one breakaway opportunities.
  • The Red Flash totaled 15 steals over the two games.
