Highland charge: NJIT beats SFU 3-2 in overtime

Newark, N.J.- The Saint Francis men's soccer team (2-2) took a first half lead thanks to goals from sophomore Kevin Smolyn (Holland, Pa./Germantown Academy) and senior Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) but could not make it stand up in a 3-2 overtime loss to NJIT (4-0) on Wednesday at Lubetkin Field.

Turning Point
A late penalty call set NJIT up with a penalty kick for Rene White who converted to the left corner to tie things up at 2-2.

Game Highlights
  • Senior Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) set up Kevin Smolyn (Holland, Pa./Germantown Academy) for his first career goal in the 4th minute. Charging diagonally behind the NJIT defense, Mastrangelo's shot deflected back to Smolyn who knocked it in the left corner for the goal.
  • Saint Francis extended its lead in the 36th minute as Mastrangelo broke away down the middle of the field off an intercepted pass and fired a shot to the right corner of the goal to go up 2-0.
  • The Highlanders responded to the Red Flash's goal in the 43rd minute. Pablo Jimenez served a long pass 45 yards in the box to Rene White who slipped by SFU defenders to tap it in and cut the Red Flash lead to 2-1.
  • Junior forward Renan Fuentes (Sao Paolo, Brazil/Colegio Joao XXIII) had SFU's last opportunity to score when Gabe Quintero (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) lofted a beautiful pass across field but the junior's shot just missed high.
  • With one-minute left in the game, the Red Flash got called for a hand ball in the box which sets up a NJIT penalty kick. Rene White was selected to take the penalty kick and converted it to the left corner to knot things up at 2-2.
  • Rene White won the match for the Knights with 2:43 remaining in the first overtime, lacing a shot into the right corner.

  • After outshooting NJIT 9-5 in the first half, the Red Flash were outshot 8-2 the rest of the way. NJIT finished with a 14-13 advantage for the match.
  • NJIT held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) led SFU with five shots, three shots on goal and one assist.
