Loretto, Pa.- In a game that was heavily projected to one team, the Saint Francis men's volleyball team (3-1) falls to No. 4 BYU (4-0) in complete sets on Saturday afternoon at DeGol Arena. The Red Flash lost 21-25, 15-25, and 18-25.
How It Happened
First Set
- The early part of the first set featured both teams battling back and forth until a 4-1 run from Cougars forced SFU to call its first timeout.
- It wasn't too long before SFU called its second timeout of the set after two kills and a service ace by the Cougars helped extend their lead, 20-13
- The Red Flash managed to crawl back, 23-20 as Patrick Bryan (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus), Cole Carver (Hershey, Pa./Hershey), and Evan Feltz (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) each had a kill in the rally.
- BYU would eventually run away with the match behind an SFU error and a Davide Gardini kill.
- End of Set One- BYU 25, SFU 21: BYU leads 1-0
Second Set
- BYU built a steady lead early in set two and led 11-5 after an attack error from Feltz.
- The Cougar lead was cut to four at 12-8 as a service error and Feltz kill helped SFU climb back.
- The momentum shifted in favor of the Cougars after two aces and two attack errors allowed BYU to go on 6-0 run and take a 18-9 lead.
- SFU never managed to fight back as a Michael Fisher (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley (Pepperdine)) attack error closed the set in favor of BYU.
- End of Set Two- BYU 25, SFU 15: BYU leads 2-0
Third Set
- The Cougars sped out in front with four-point rally to lead 7-3.
- BYU managed to not let their lead dip until a quick SFU burst capped by a Fisher kill put the game at 13-11.
- Two straight kills shifted the momentum of the set as the Cougars rallied to a 6-2 run to take a 19-13 lead.
- BYU never looked back as a service error and attack error capped the set and match.
- End of Set Three- BYU 25, SFU18: BYU wins 3-0
Game Notes
- BYU leads the all-time series 2-0. The Red Flash will travel next season to take on BYU in Provo, Utah.
- Fisher had a team-high eight kills along with five digs.
- BJ Blair (Bridgewater, Pa./Bridgewater Raritan) led the defense with seven digs as he also dished out 28 assists.
- Bryan provided some offense for the Red Flash as he contributed with 7 kills.
- BYU's Davide Gardini had a match-high 11 kills.
