Free is Good
Â
As the holiday season approaches, Saint Francis has been in a receiving mood, capitalizing on 75 of its last 88 attempts from the charity stripe, an astounding 85.2%. Free throws plagued the Red Flash in early season losses at VCU and Richmond, where SFU shot 24-of-40 (60.0%). Senior
Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./Delsea) has been at the center of the turnaround, making 32 of his last 36 tries after starting the year 6-for-13. Â As a team, the Red Flash are shooting 77.8% from the free throw line on the season.
Â
Stewart's Steadiness
Â
Redshirt sophomore
Tyler Stewart (Silver Spring, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) continues to get more comfortable in the Saint Francis offense game-by-game. Stewart, in his first season with the program after transferring from Binghamton, has scored in double figures in three straight games and is averaging 12.3 ppg in the stretch. He ranks third on the team in scoring at 11.3 ppg and is 7-for-15 (46.7%) from three-point range.
Â
Finding its Footing
Â
Saint Francis has proven it can compete with some of the elite programs for large stretches, but it has taken the Red Flash too long to get comfortable in those games. The Red Flash trailed current No. 21 VCU 23-7 after 10 minutes before outscoring the Rams by two over the final 30 minutes. The same thing happened on Saturday at ACC power Florida State. Saint Francis dug itself a 26-9 hole 10 minutes in before outscoring the larger Seminoles by two over the final 30 minutes.
