Red Flash fall in season-opener at Virginia Tech

Blacksburg, Va. – Saint Francis women's basketball opened the 2019-20 season with a 105-41 defeat to Virginia Tech on Tuesday night at Cassell Coliseum. Jenna Mastellone (New York City, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) paced the Red Flash with eight points, while Sam Sabino (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair Haven (New Hampshire)) added seven points.

Sabino connected on a three-pointer on the Red Flash's first offensive possession and finished the night shooting 3-of-6 from the floor, including 1-of-2 from three-point range. As a team, SFU struggled shooting, going 14-of-53 from the field and 5-of-15 from three-point range. The Red Flash did convert on 8-of-10 free throws as Mastellone herself was 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.

Karson Swogger's (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) trifecta cut the Virginia Tech lead to 14-8 with 5:42 to play in the first quarter. The Hokies then used a 16-0 run to close the period holding a 30-8 lead.

Saint Francis started the second frame with a 5-0 spurt as Thomas knocked down a layup followed by a Lili Benzel (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle (Shippensburg)) three-pointer. Virginia Tech's high-powered offense then took over as the Hokies stormed out to a 51-15 halftime advantage.

The Red Flash had their best offensive output in the third quarter with 17 points, but Virginia Tech didn't slow down and led 82-32 at the end of the third frame. The Hokies rolled from there in the final period to secure the win.

Saint Francis returns to action at West Virginia on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
