Red Flash travel to face West Virginia Thursday night

Morgantown, W.Va. – Saint Francis women's basketball continues is season-opening road swing at West Virginia on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
 
Scouting West Virginia
The Mountaineers were picked third in the Big 12 Conference Preseason Poll and are receiving votes in the Preseason AP Top 25. West Virginia went 22-11 last season and advanced to the third round of the WNIT before falling to finalist Northwestern. WVU returns two starters from last season, but will be without the team's leading scorer, redshirt senior Tynice Martin, who has been suspended indefinitely from the team. Sophomore Madisen Smith returns after averaging 7.3 points and 4.1 assists per game, while redshirt junior Kysre Gondrezick is also back after averaging 13.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per contest in only five games before missing the remainder of the season for personal reasons.
 
Series History
Saint Francis is 0-5 in the all-time series history against West Virginia with all five games being played in Morgantown. The teams first squared off in 2004-05 in the closest meeting of the series when WVU escaped with a 74-68 victory. The most recent contest between the teams came on Dec. 29, 2014 when No. 21 West Virginia picked up a 101-46 win over the Red Flash.
 
Facing the Big 12
Saint Francis meets a Big 12 opponent for the second straight season after playing at defending national champion Baylor in 2018-19. The previous time that the Red Flash faced a Big 12 opponent was in 2014 at West Virginia.
 
Season opening struggle
SFU dropped its season-opener for the third straight season in a 105-41 defeat at Virginia Tech on Tuesday night. The Red Flash previously fell at Rutgers to open the 2018-19 campaign and dropped its 2017-18 lid-lifter at Toledo.
 
Whittington makes head coaching debut
Saint Francis head coach Keila Whittington made her head coaching debut at Virginia Tech on Tuesday. The long-time assistant coach, who was previously at Marist was named the eighth head coach in SFU program history on April 24, 2019.
 
Solid free throw shooting
After not getting to the free throw line in the first half at Virginia Tech, Saint Francis converted on 8-of-10 free throws in the second half. Junior Jenna Mastellone (New York City, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) led the Red Flash with eight points, including going 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.
