Saint Francis looks to stay hot at UMBC

Game Notes | Watch | Live Stats

Loretto, Pa. –
The Saint Francis men's basketball team (4-4) looks to climb over .500 for the first time this season with its game at UMBC (5-4) on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1 p.m.

Scouting UMBC

The Retrievers are 5-4 but could be without its leading scorer, Darnell Rogers, who has missed the last two games with an injury. Without Rogers in the lineup, UMBC lost to American 85-61. The Red Flash defeated American 79-76 in Loretto earlier this year. Senior K.J. Jackson, a Second Team All-America East selection last season, is tied with Rogers for the team-lead in scoring at 14.0 ppg. UMBC is active defensively, forcing opponents into 16.7 turnovers per game.

Series History

Saint Francis trails the all-time series 13-11. The two teams last met in the 2017 CIT, a 92-82 win for the Retrievers.

 Difficult Schedule

The Red Flash are 4-4 despite playing one of its toughest non-conference slates in program history. SFU's four losses have come to VCU, Richmond, Delaware and Florida State, who are a combined 29-5 on the season. Saint Francis led 7-1 Richmond by 10 with 1:41 to play before falling in overtime. Richmond has since gone on to beat Vanderbilt, Wisconsin and Boston College while Florida State is ranked No. 17 in the country.

Bench Mob

The Saint Francis bench has done a fantastic job of providing a lift, outscoring its opponents' bench in six of eight games. Senior Scott Meredith (Pilot Mountain, N.C./Hargrave Military Academy (Va.)) scored nine, redshirt freshman Bryce Laskey (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) scored eight, junior Mark Flagg (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) added seven and redshirt sophomore Tyler Stewart (Silver Spring, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) pitched in with six as SFU's bench outscored Lehigh's 32-5 in its win on Wednesday night. Flagg is averaging 7.8 ppg off the bench over his last four games, while Stewart is the team's fourth leading scorer at 10.0 ppg.
