Red Flash drop home opener to Youngstown State, 56-46

Loretto, Pa. – Saint Francis women's basketball (2-6) fell to Youngstown State (5-3) 56-46 in the home opener on Saturday at DeGol Arena. Sam Miller (Red Lion, PA/Dallastown) and Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort) led the Red Flash with eight points each.

The game started off as a back-and-forth contest with SFU taking an 11-10 lead on a Karson Swogger (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) three-pointer with 3:40 to play in the opening period. Youngstown State surged back in front 19-14 before a Jada Dapaa (Potomac, MD/Holy Child) layup with 43 seconds to go cut the Penguins' lead to 19-16 at the end of the first stanza.

The Red Flash trimmed the margin to 24-23 following a Sam Sabino (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair Haven (New Hampshire)) trifecta and layup with 5:29 remaining in the second quarter. Youngstown State then went on a 9-0 run to take a 33-23 lead with 1:13 to go. The Penguins held a 34-27 advantage at halftime.

Phee Allen's (Newport News, VA/Woodside) three-pointer cut the YSU lead to 38-31 with 7:35 left in the third period. Saint Francis kept on the attack and narrowed the margin to 41-37 following a Miller jumper with 3:04 remaining. The Penguins seized a 45-39 lead at the end of the third frame.

After a defensive stalemate to start the fourth quarter, YSU finally broke through with the first basket of the period on a jumper with 6:01 to go in the contest. That sparked a 9-0 Penguins run to go ahead 54-39 with 3:10 left. After each team added a basket, SFU scored the final five points of the game on a Caitlin Carroll (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) three-pointer and a Jenna Mastellone (New York City, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) layup to produce the final score.
