Men’s Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets to #2 Hawaii

The Saint Francis men's volleyball team battled early in the first two sets, but ultimately fell in straight sets 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-12) to second-ranked Hawaii Friday evening on the road.
 
Saint Francis dropped to 5-4 overall on the season while the Rainbow Warriors improved to 6-0.
 
How It Happened
 
Set One
  • Hawaii took advantage of a couple of kills and a few early errors by the Red Flash to lead 8-3 and force SFU to call a timeout.
  • The second-ranked Rainbow Warriors proceeded to score seven of the next 11 points, including a five-point streak, before SFU finally stopped the bleeding on Cole Carver's (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) kill at 15-7.
  • Errors marred the Red Flash in the first set and helped Hawaii continue to build its lead to as high as 10, the margin of the final score of the set.
  • Set Score: Hawaii 25, SFU 15
  • Match: Hawaii leads 1-0
 
Set Two
  • Both teams traded points early in the set as Hawaii held a slight lead 9-8.
  • The Red Flash would keep the lead within three points before Christian Graziano (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) closed the gap inside one point, 17-16.
  • Three-straight points off an ace, kill and error would help Hawaii jump out to a 20-16 lead and force SFU to call a timeout.
  • Following the timeout, Hawaii managed to gradually extend its lead before closing the set on a 3-0 run.
  • Set Score: Hawaii 25, SFU 20
  • Hawaii leads 2-0
 
Set Three
  • Hawaii came out on fire in set three and put together 8-0 run to lead 8-1 and force SFU to call an early timeout.
  • The Red Flash quickly responded with a four-point spree to close the lead to five at 16-11.
  • The Rainbow Warriors regained rhythm to extend its lead out to 21-12 after a pair of points from Rado Parapunov (kill) and Colton Cowell (ace).
  • A 4-0 run would help Rainbow Warriors hold its footing and the clinch the set and match.
  • Set Score: Hawaii 25, SFU 12
  • Hawaii wins 3-0
Notes
  • Saint Francis fell victim to its own errors in the match. The Red Flash had 15 service errors compared to Hawaii's six, 19-6 in attack errors, and four to one in reception errors.
  • The Red Flash hit .200 (34-19-75) to the Rainbow Warriors .585 (37-6-53).
  • Senior Michael Fisher (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley (Pepperdine)) led the Red Flash with 13 kills while hitting .320 (13-5-25). He also had three digs.
  • Graziano was second on the team with a season-high eight kills while hitting .462 (8-2-13) in three sets of work.
  • BJ Blair (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater Raritan) led the Red Flash with 31 assists and chipped in two digs while fellow teammate Gabe Woffindin (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) provided the team with three digs.
  • Hawaii's Rado Parapunov led the Rainbow Warriors with 11 kills and a .714 hitting percentage (11-1-14).
 
Next Up
The Red Flash will bounce back tomorrow, February 9, with another road match against Belmont Abbey set to begin at 7 p.m.
