Loretto, Pa. – The top two teams in the Northeast Conference will square off in the championship game on ESPN2 on Tuesday night when Saint Francis (18-13, 12-6) battles Fairleigh Dickinson (19-13, 12-6) at DeGol Arena at 7 p.m.
Scouting Fairleigh Dickinson
The Knights shared the regular-season title with Saint Francis with identical 12-6 conference records. Fairleigh Dickinson has won seven in a row since an 87-62 loss to Saint Francis on Feb. 14 and leads the NEC with a +4.0 scoring margin. The Knights are deadly from three-point range, shooting a league best 40.0% on the season. First Team All-Conference selection Darnell Edge is the top three-point shooter in the league at 46.9%. He also leads the Knights in scoring at 16.3 ppg. Second Team All-Conference selection Mike Holloway Jr. adds a physical dimension to FDU's frontcourt at 12.5 ppg and 5.6 rpg. Point guard Jahlil Jenkins averages 13.3 ppg and is third in the conference at 4.6 assists per game.
Series History
The Red Flash and Knights each recorded convincing wins on the opponent's home court with the Knights defeating SFU by 18 in Loretto in January and the Red Flash defeating the Knights by 25 in Teaneck in February. The 2019 Championship will be a rematch of last year's quarterfinal, won by the Knights 84-75 in Loretto.
Home Court Advantage
Saint Francis's biggest advantage heading into Tuesday night will be its home court advantage. The Red Flash are 12-3 at home this seaso and 23-6 since the start of the 2017-18 season. Two of the six losses, however, have come at the hands of Fairleigh Dickinson, including the loss in last year's NEC Quarterfinal game. Saint Francis is 9-3 all-time in DeGol Arena for the NEC Tournament.
1990-91 All Over Again
The 2018-19 season has drawn many comparisons to the 1990-91 season in which the Red Flash captured its first and only NEC title. Both the 1990-91 and 2018-19 teams enjoyed a season-best win streak of eight during the season. Both teams had three 1,000 point scorers with Joe Anderson, Mike Iuzzolino and John Hilvert starring for the 1990-91 team and
Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./Delsea),
Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) and
Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte). SFU hosted Farleigh Dickinson in the 1991championship game after the teams shared the regular-season crown. SFU won the tiebreak, just as it did this season.
Success of the One Seed
Saint Francis has continued the trend of the top seed in the conference tournament making it to the title game. The top seed has reached the title game in six straight seasons and nine of the last 10 seasons, but has won the championship game just four times.
White Out
Fans attending Tuesday night's game are strongly encouraged to wear white as we will #PackDEGOL with a whiteout to match SFU's uniform combination. 1,000 white t-shirts will be provided to the first fans in attendance.
