Red Flash comeback attempt falls just short in 5-4 defeat at Carnegie Mellon

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Saint Francis women's tennis (3-14, 2-1 NEC) had its comeback attempt fall just short in a 5-4 defeat at Carnegie Mellon (11-5) on Sunday at the Alpha Tennis Center.

SFU picked up three singles wins with Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School), Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) and Lucia Seigford (Madrid, Spain/Mirasur) all recording singles victories. The Red Flash also secured a point in doubles with Miller and Laura Gutierrez (Bogota, Colombia/Cibercolegio UCN) teaming up for a victory at No. 2 doubles.

"Another match of three sets and tiebreaks," Head Coach Lisa Swope said. "We fought hard and had close and long matches, but came up short. Our seniors shined once again winning hard fought three-setters."

After falling behind 4-1 in the overall match score, Miller sparked an SFU comeback attempt with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 triumph over Victoria Chang in No. 4 singles. Bode then secured a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win over Melissa Strome at the No. 3 position. Seigford tied the match at 4-4 with a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory over Janabelle Wu at No. 2. The Tartans pulled out the match with Jamie Vizelman's 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 win over Gutierrez in No.1 singles.

In the first completed singles match, Carnegie Mellon's Lindy Cornwall knocked off Romina Cutipa (Huancayo, Peru/San Juan Bosco) at the No. 5 position, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4. The Tartans won at No. 6 singles by default.

In doubles action to start the competition, CMU's Strome and Vizelman took No. 1 over Bode and Seigford in a narrow 8-7 (7) pro set. Miller and Gutierrez defeated Wu and Alex Iordache at No. 2 doubles, 8-5. The Tartans won at No. 3 by default.

Saint Francis will return to action for its final NEC contest of the season at Sacred Heart on Saturday, April 6 at 6 p.m.
