To the Halls of Montezuma: Water Polo Sails to the Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The Saint Francis water polo team completes their California expedition with three matches at the Aztec Invitational. The Red Flash duel host No. 22 San Diego State on Friday night at 7:15 ET/4:15 PT, and on Saturday, SFU plays Fresno Pacific at 2:45 ET/11:45 PT and No. 17 Long Beach State at 6:30 ET/ 3:30 PT.

Scouting San Diego State

Similar to many Californian schools, the Aztecs enter Friday's game with a losing record (5-7) courtesy of a schedule peppered with top-flight squads. SDSU vanquished No. 21 CSUN by a score of 11-4 at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. In their most recent outing, the Aztecs demolished Villanova 14-2. Hannah Carrillo and Shelby Kraft lead the offensive attack. Emily Barnett is the main defensive juggernaut. Carin Crawford has served as the Aztec emperor for more than 20 campaigns. This is the first ever matchup between SFU and SDSU.

Scouting Fresno Pacific

The Sunbirds are 3-12 on the year but FPU enters the Aztec Invitational on a two-game winning streak after narrowly edging Saint Francis Brooklyn and Villanova by one goal. The Sunbirds feature a four-ponged attack as Sam Witt, Amy Zaninovich, Katie Kisling, and Savannah Mangrum provide strikes from every direction. Head coach Bryan Suhovy does double duty as the men's water polo and women's water polo coach and he has entered his eighth season on the job. This is the first ever matchup between SFU and FPU.

Scouting Long Beach State

The 49ers head into the tournament with a 6-10 albeit against an ambitious schedule. The Red Flash and the 49ers met up earlier in the season at the Michigan Invite. LBST won 17-4. Orsi Hertzka continues to lead the team in goals with 41. Beyond the star scorer, Long Beach State has four scorers with double digits goals. It is a team loaded and balanced with offense. Head coach Gavin Arroyo coaches both the men and women's water polo teams and this is his seventh season as the women's coach. LBST is 1-0 all-time against SFU.
