Loretto, Pa- The Saint Francis men's volleyball team ends the 2019 season with a straight-set loss to Princeton (23-25, 21-25, 19-25) Thursday night at Princeton's Dillon Gymnasium during the EIVA Semfinal round.
The Red Flash wrapped up its 2019 season with a 15-14 overall record and a 9-5 mark in conference play. Princeton improves to 16-12 and a chance to win the EIVA conference crown against Penn State on Saturday.
How It Happened
First Set
- Saint Francis got out to an early lead in the first thanks to kills by Patrick Bryan (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus), BJ Blair (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater Raritan), and Evan Feltz (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales).
- The Red Flash extended its lead to as much as seven at 11-4 before Princeton burned it first timeout of the match.
- Princeton managed to score the next five of six points following the timeout, which put the set within three at 12-9 as Feltz and Joshua Blair (Matterson. Illnois/Marian Catholic ) ended the run with back to back kills.
- SFU put together another run to lead 17-11 but Princeton regained its footing and swung the momentum in their favor to bring the set within two at 21-19.
- The Tigers eventually fought back to tie things at 23-23 and found the points it needed to close out the set.
- Set One: Prince 25, SFU 23- Prince leads 1-0
Second Set
- Saint Francis won the first three points and, just like the first set, gave up the lead on a 4-0 run.
- With a 6-5 lead, the Tigers managed to build its lead to 14-9, before SFU called a timeout to talk things over.
- The Red Flash never pulled within three the rest of way as Princeton maintained a steady lead and eventually clinched the set.
- Set Two: Prince 25, SFU 21- Prince leads 2-0
Third Set
- The third set was closely contested for the first several points with neither team leading by more than two until Princeton's Kendall Ratter converted an ace to give the Tigers an 11-8 lead.
- Two 3-0 runs allowed the Tigers to break open the set at 17-10 and force SFU to call timeout.
- The Tigers were clicking on all cylinders and didn't allow the Red Flash much chance to fight back the rest of the way.
- Set Three: Prince 25, SFU 12- Prince wins 2-0
Game Notes
- Michael Fisher (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley (Pepperdine)) led the Red Flash in kills with 10 at a .333 hitting percentage (10-3-21). He also finished the season with 20 matches in double-digit kills and seven with 20+ kills.
- Feltz finished his final game as a Red Flash with 7 kills on a .200 hitting percentage (7-4-15).
- B. Blair finished the match with 29 assists and added five digs.
- Gabe Woffindin (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) had a team-high six digs.
- The Tigers outhit the Red Flash .359 (30-7-64) to .257 (37-18-74).
- Princeton edged the Red Flash at the service line with a 9-2 lead in service aces.
