PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Saint Francis water polo team won a massive 11-7 victory over George Washington in the CWPA Tournament. The Red Flash fell 13-8 to Brown University to finish the tournament, and by extension, the 2019 season.
George Washington Recap
- The Red Flash jumped out to a 3-2 lead by the end of the first period thanks to goals by Breanna Dupperon (Regina, Canada/Campbell Collegiate), Metztli Enriquez (Atwater, CA/El Capitan), and Erin O'Neill (Landsdale, Pa/North Penn).
- Despite goals by Caroline Gillespie (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn High School) and Dupperon, the Colonials drew even with SFU by halftime, 5-5.
- The upperclassmen of O'Neill, Kelsey Gring (Sinking Spring, Pa/Wilson), and Ani Aghakhanian (La Crescenta, Calif/La Valley College) provided the Red Flash with a 8-6 lead entering the fourth period.
- George Washington drew within 8-7 in the fourth period.
- That was as close as the Colonials could come as Kaitlyn Nguyen (Annandale, Va/Bishop Ireton), Aghakhanian, and Enriquez all scored goals and the defense held strong to win 11-7.
Brown Recap
- The Bears took a 4-2 lead after one period of play.
- Despite a Gring tally, it was 7-3 at halftime.
- The Red Flash scored twice in the third period but the deficit grew to 10-5.
- O'Neill, Aghakhanian, and Julia Bradford (Edinboro, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) attempted to rally the troops with goals but Brown matched the effort to win 13-8.
Accomplishments
The win over George Washington was the second CWPA tournament win in program history. It was the first since SFU beat George Washington in 2017. Also, the Red Flash finished sixth in the CWPA Tournament for their highest finish in school history.
