Red Flash take down Terriers in 82-72 victory

Loretto, Pa. – Saint Francis women's basketball (5-10, 3-1 NEC) had four players score in double figures on the way to an 82-72 win over St. Francis Brooklyn (5-9, 1-2 NEC) on Saturday at DeGol Arena. Karson Swogger (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) tied her career-high with 29 points, while Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort) scored 14 points. Sam Sabino (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair Haven (New Hampshire)) recorded a season-high 13 points and Phee Allen (Newport News, VA/Woodside) added 10 points.

Trailing 36-29 at halftime, the Red Flash came out in the second half on a mission. Thomas sparked the scoring with a three-pointer just over a minute into the third quarter. The Terriers led 44-35 before Swogger scored five straight points to trim the margin to 44-40 with 6:47 to play in the third period.

The teams continued to trade baskets until Swogger drilled another three-pointer to tie the game 51-51 with 2:45 to play in the frame. A Thomas layup put the Red Flash ahead 53-51 and Allen connected on two free throws with 31 seconds remaining to give SFU a 57-51 lead at the end of the third stanza.

Saint Francis jumped in front 66-57 on a Jada Dapaa (Potomac, MD/Holy Child) layup with 7:10 to play. Swogger knocked down another trey as SFU held a 69-60 advantage. A quick 5-0 Terriers run pulled the visitors within four at 69-65 with 5:46 left. Sabino then stole the ball at midcourt and drove to the basket for an old-fashioned three-point play that lit a fire into the Red Flash.

A Thomas layup extended the SFU lead to 74-65 with four minutes remaining. The Red Flash were a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the final two minutes and Sabino knocked down a jumper to give SFU an 82-69 lead with 30 seconds to go. A Terriers three-pointer in the final seconds produced the final score.

St. Francis Brooklyn stormed out of the gates with a 15-7 lead before Swogger scored five straight points to trim the margin to 15-12 with 4:12 remaining in the first period. The Terriers led 20-12 until Lili Benzel (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle (Shippensburg)) connected on a trifecta with 2:25 to play. Both teams were held scoreless over the final two minutes as St. Francis Brooklyn held a 20-15 lead at the end of the first frame.
