FDU Game Notes
Loretto, Pa. - The Saint Francis men's basketball team (10-5, 3-1 NEC) takes its three-game win streak on the road in front of a national audience on Wednesday as it plays Fairleigh Dickinson (3-12, 1-3 NEC) at 5 p.m. on ESPNU. Mike Crispino and Seth Greenberg will call the action.
Â
Scouting Fairleigh Dickinson
Â
The defending NEC Champions have yet to conjure up the same magic from 2018-19 and are 3-12 overall and 1-3 in league play. Junior point guard Jahlil Jenkins, who scored 20 points in Loretto in last season's NEC Championship game, leads the team in scoring at 15.6 ppg. Four starters average in double figures with Kaleb Bishop (13.9 ppg, 8.3 rpg), Xzavier Malone-Key (13.2 ppg) and Elyjah Williams (11.6 ppg) joining Jenkins in double figures. Fairleigh Dickinson's lack of bench production has been a glaring issue as the FDU starters average 59.9 ppg and its bench averages just 9.4 points per game.
Â
Series History
Â
Fairleigh Dickinson took two of three from Saint Francis last season. After the team's split the regular-season title, Saint Francis hosted the Knights in the NEC Championship, a game won by FDU 85-76. The series is tied 47-47, while head coach
Rob Krimmel is 9-7 all-time vs. the Knights.
Â
Thorn in the Side
Â
Fairleigh Dickinson has been a thorn in SFU's side recently, knocking the Red Flash out of the postseason in each of the last two seasons, including the 2018-19 NEC Championship. The Rothman Center has been kind to SFU, however, as the Red Flash have won the last two meetings in the building.
Â
Winning Tight
Â
The Red Flash squeaked one out at the buzzer on Saturday night thanks to a game-winning shot from senior Randall Gaskins Jr. The senior-ladened Red Flash have shown a propensity for winning close games since the start of 2018-19, going 6-2 in one possession games. After dropping an overtime heartbreaker to Richmond by two points, a game in which the Red Flash led by double digits inside of two minutes, Saint Francis has pulled out its last three contests that have gone down to the wire, defeating American 79-76, UMBC 63-60 and St. Francis Brooklyn, 81-80.
Â
Offensive Juggernaut
Â
Saint Francis has ranked in the top two in the NEC in scoring in each of the last three seasons, but questions circled around whether the program could replace First Team All-League point guard
Jamaal King (Salisbury, Md./Bishop O'Connell (Va.)) and sharpshooter
Andre Wolford (North Olmstead, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) heading into 2019-20. As we near the midway point of the season, those questions have been put to rest. The Red Flash rank second in the NEC in scoring at 77.6 ppg, and is the only team in the league to have two players in the top five in scoring:
Isaiah Blackmon (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) (16.9 ppg) and
Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./Delsea) (16.2 ppg). Only the 2017-18 team that averaged 79.0 ppg has put up better offensive numbers in Krimmel's tenure than this team.
