Red Flash pick up victory over Bryant, 64-58

Loretto, Pa. – Saint Francis women's basketball (9-12, 7-3 NEC) held off a late Bryant (5-14, 3-5 NEC) rally as the Red Flash picked up a 64-58 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday at DeGol Arena. Jenna Mastellone (New York City, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort) led SFU in scoring with 13 points each, while MaKenzie Pollard (Baltimore, MD/Western) added a career-high 11 points.

Saint Francis held a 57-44 lead following a Karson Swogger (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) jumper with 4:12 to play in the game. A 10-0 Bryant run cut the margin to 57-54 with 1:31 remaining. The Bulldogs then intentionally fouled to send the Red Flash to the line. SFU converted on 7-of-8 free throws over the final 1:17 and Bryant wouldn't come closer than four points in the final minute as the Red Flash secured the win.

After a slow start offensively for both teams, SFU held an 8-4 lead following 2-of-2 Swogger free throws with 3:15 to play in the first quarter. Pollard knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to put the Red Flash ahead 14-4 with 2:10 to go. The Bulldogs cut the lead to 14-8 at the end of the first stanza.

Bryant came out hot in the second period to tie the game 14-14 in the opening minutes. Saint Francis then went on a 9-2 run to seize a 23-16 lead following consecutive Thomas trifectas with 5:23 to play. The Bulldogs trimmed the margin to 26-22 before the Red Flash extended the advantage to 34-24 at halftime.

Bryant pulled within 38-31 with 6:51 left in the third quarter. Both teams were held scoreless over the next four minutes until Phee Allen (Newport News, VA/Woodside) broke the drought on a jumper with 2:22 to play. Thomas connected on 2-of-2 free throws with less than a second remaining to put the Red Flash ahead 44-33 at the end of the third frame.

A Sam Miller (Red Lion, PA/Dallastown) layup gave Saint Francis its largest lead of the game at 53-39 with 6:41 left in the game. Bryant continued to chip away at the lead, but the Red Flash defense held strong and solid free throw shooting propelled SFU to the win.
