Red Flash effort falls short to Robert Morris, 66-57

Loretto, Pa. – Saint Francis women's basketball (11-5, 9-6 NEC) put up a valiant effort, but fell just short to Robert Morris (19-6, 14-0 NEC) in a 66-57 defeat on Monday at DeGol Arena. Karson Swogger (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) paced the Red Flash with 13 points, while Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort) pulled down 13 rebounds.

SFU got out to a red-hot start with a 7-0 lead following a Phee Allen (Newport News, VA/Woodside) jumper with 7:44 to play in the first quarter. Following a timeout, the Colonials responded with a 7-0 run of its own to square the score with 2:54 left in the first frame. Swogger connected on a three-pointer to give the Red Flash a 10-7 lead before RMU seized a 13-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Robert Morris picked up where it left off and grabbed a 19-10 lead with 6:20 remaining in the second period. Saint Francis continued to fight back as a MaKenzie Pollard (Baltimore, MD/Western) fast break layup cut the margin to 23-17 with 1:50 to go. RMU held a 28-17 lead at halftime.

The Colonials started the third quarter strong to extend the score to 34-17. A Thomas jumper narrowed the margin to 38-25 with 6:24 left. Robert Morris continued to have an answer as the teams traded baskets before Jenna Mastellone (New York City, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) converted on 2-of-2 free throws in the final seconds to trim the lead to 47-37 at the end of the third stanza.

Following a Mastellone three-pointer to open the scoring in the fourth quarter, RMU used consecutive layups to take a 51-40 advantage. Swogger knocked down her next two three-point attempts to pull the Red Flash within 53-46 with 4:54 left. SFU countered Robert Morris field goals with 6-of-6 from the free throw line over the next four minutes to cut the margin to 58-52 with 1:18 to go. Saint Francis wouldn't come any closer as the Colonials closed with solid free throw shooting to hand the Red Flash the loss.
