Chattanooga, Tenn.- The Saint Francis softball team dropped a tough 5-4 game to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to conclude the Frost Classic.
Recap
SIUE scored in both the first and second innings to take the early lead. Rachel Marsden (Erie, Pa./McDowell) started in the circle for SFU. In the first inning, the Cougars used two walks and a single to set up a fielder's choice. They followed up in the second inning as a walk, a passed ball, and a single scored the second run.
The Red Flash countered in the second inning by launching a bombing campaign. Brittney Crawford (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) led off with a single and then Mekenzie Saban (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) jacked a moonshot over the right center field wall to tie the game at 2-2. Halle Marion (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) walked but three straight strikeouts ended the inning.
SIUE regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning by banging a solo home run. Marsden recovered to gain three outs but the momentum had shifted.
The Cougars added insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Three singles ended up scoring a run for a 4-2 lead. A well-placed suicide squeeze scored a second run for a 5-2 advantage. SIUE appeared to hit a home run but Crawford went up and pulled an Andy Van Slyke to nab the flying sphere. A Sportscenter Top Ten moment for sure.
The Red Flash used the momentum from Crawford's catch to cut into the deficit. Allyn Bezjal smacked a single to start and Jordan Frank (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic) cracked a two-run homer over the center field wall to make it 5-4. SFU attempted to keep the train moving but two outs followed to end the frame.
At the start of the bottom of the sixth inning, Grace Vesco ( Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) entered the circle and pitched a scoreless inning yielding only a single hit. Saint Francis tried to tie it up in the top of the seventh inning but three hard hit balls went to waiting SIUE gloves and the Red Flash fell 5-4.
