Red Flash fall to Wagner on the road, 55-50

Staten Island, N.Y. – Saint Francis women's basketball (10-13, 8-4 NEC) fell to Wagner (8-13, 4-6 NEC) 55-50 on Saturday at the Spiro Center. Karson Swogger (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) led the Red Flash in scoring with 16 points, while Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort) added 14 points and seven rebounds.

SFU held a 47-42 lead following a Thomas jumper with 7:15 to play in the game. A 9-0 Wagner run put the Seahawks ahead 51-47 with 4:44 remaining. Both teams were held scoreless until Swogger connected on a three-pointer to pull the Red Flash within 51-50 with 1:22 to go. Back-to-back Wagner field goals gave the Seahawks a 55-50 lead and Saint Francis came up empty on offense in the final minute.

The Red Flash jumped out to a 9-4 lead following a Swogger three-pointer with 5:30 left in the first quarter. Katie Dettwiller's (Portsmouth, Ohio/Notre Dame) layup put SFU in front 13-12 with 1:14 to go. Wagner then closed the period on a 6-0 run to hold an 18-13 lead at the end of the first stanza.

A back-and-forth start to the second period saw the Red Flash cut the lead to 20-19 after a Thomas jumper with 6:07 left. Swogger made 2-of-2 from the free throw line to give Saint Francis a 23-22 lead with 1:52 to play. Wagner connected on consecutive three-pointers to take a 28-23 halftime advantage.

The Seahawks led 36-31 with just under six minutes to go in the third quarter. SFU then used a 9-2 run over the next five minutes as a Phee Allen (Newport News, VA/Woodside) jumper capped the surge and put the Red Flash ahead 40-38. Saint Francis held a 42-40 lead at the end of the third frame.

Swogger opened the scoring in the final period with a three-pointer to give Saint Francis a 45-40 advantage. Wagner continued to fight back and chipped away at the lead before using the late run to hand the Red Flash the defeat.
