Braxton etches name in history

Loretto, Pa. - The Hall of Fame career of senior guard Keith Braxton (Glassboro, N.J./Delsea) was cemented on Saturday as he became the first player in the 39-year history of the Northeast Conference, and the second in Saint Francis history, to reach 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.

The 2018-19 NEC Player of the Year and a member of the NEC Team of the Decade, Braxton is one of eight players in league history to reach 2,000 points and one of just two to hit the 1,000 rebound mark. He ranks sixth all-time in scoring and is second in rebounding, where he is just 30 boards behind all-time leader Jalon Cannon, who snared 1,159 for St. Francis Brooklyn from 2011-15.

In regards to the Saint Francis record books, only Maurice Stokes ('55) and Joe Anderson ('91) have reached 2,000 career points, and only Stokes is part of the 2,000/1,000 club.

Braxton has filled the stat sheet in other ways as well. He enters this week's NEC Tournament ranked third in career scoring, rebounding and assists, and fourth in steals.

A three-time All-NEC honoree and the 2016-17 NEC Rookie of the Year, Braxton also became the conference's all-time leader in combined points and rebounds. With 3,132 points he surpassed Bryant's Alex Francis. Francis ended his career with 2,085 points and 990 rebounds for a combined total of 3,075 from 2010-14.

To illustrate how difficult it is to reach the 2K/1K threshold, only 40 players nationwide have accomplished the feat since the 1992 season. Of that group, 25 have made it to the NBA on a list that includes Doug McDermott, David West, Tyler Hansborough, Kenneth Faried, Nick Collison, Malik Rose, Mike Muscala and Kyle Singler.

Braxton is one of two current players who have hit 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. BYU's Yoeli Childs also reached the milestone on Saturday. He currently ranks 15th among all NCAA Division I players in scoring, second in rebounding and tied-for-third in double-doubles, where he is the school's all-time leader with 44. He also recorded the program's only triple-double in a win over FDU during the 2017-18 season.

Braxton currently ranks in the NEC top 10 in scoring (17.2 third), rebounding (7.5, ninth), assists (3.7, sixth), free throw percentage (.817, sixth) and steals (1.3, ninth). He is one of four players nationwide who is averaging at least 17 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 3.0 apg and 1.0 spg.

Fans can see Braxton live in action on Wednesday when Saint Francis hosts Bryant at 7 p.m. in an NEC Quarterfinal.
