San Jose, Calif.- The Red Flash softball team lost 1-0 to San Jose State and 8-0 Utah State on Day One of the Silicon Valley Classic II.
Game One Recap
The Red Flash and the Spartans engaged in a massive pitcher's duel. Rachel Marsden (Erie, Pa./McDowell) started in the circle for Saint Francis and went blow to blow with the San Jose State pitcher who was a prized starter in the Mountain West Conference last season.
In the first three innings, only two runners successfully reached base. Both baserunners were Spartans. One hit a single and the other Spartan reached on an error. But Marsden kept strong and shut down any scoring opportunity. Jordan Frank (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic) helped in the first inning by making a #SCTop10 caliber catch.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, San Jose State scored the game's sole run. Two singles and a fielder's choice placed a Spartan on third. The third single of the inning scored the runner and gave SJSU 1-0 advantage.
Neither team offered much of a threat for the next two innings outside of San Jose State placing runners on the corners but Frank recorded another amazing catch to destroy the threat.
Saint Francis entered the top of the seventh inning looking to tie. With two outs, Allyn Bezjak (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin High School) singled to right field. Marsden followed with another single but Rousseau popped up to end the game.
Game Two Recap
Grace Vesco ( Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) started in the circle for Saint Francis and recorded two scoreless innings. SFU was also kept from scoring by the Utah State pitcher.
The Aggies broke through for five runs in the bottom of the third. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases. A throwing error by Bezjak scored the first run. A single followed up to plate two more runs. Another single scored two runs to finish the inning at 5-0.
Three singles in the top of the sixth inning scored two more runs for the Aggies and effectively put the game away. Marsden reached on a single but three outs doomed the hype and the Flash fell 8-0,
