Red Flash Edged 3-2 by Aggies
Adam Evanko
Santa Clara, Calif. - The Red Flash finished their Californian trip with a 3-2 loss to Utah State and a cancellation against St. Mary's.
Game One Recap
The Red Flash threatened in the first inning after Allyn Bezjak (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin High School) walked and Rachel Marsden (Erie, Pa./McDowell) singled to left field but Halle Marion's (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) hard liner was snagged by the second baseman for the third out.
Utah State had only one baserunner in their portion of the first inning but it was a costly one to SFU. A Utah State ball took a wicked bounce and knocked Bezjak in the mouth forcing her removal from the game.
After both teams went scoreless in the second inning, the Red Flash struck for the first run of the game in the top of the third inning. Mekenzie Saban (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) led off with a triple and Jordan Frank (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic) smashed a double over the head of the center fielder to score the run. Meadow Uncapher (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant High School) who replaced Bezjak at first walked. But Rachel Marsden (Erie, Pa./McDowell) struck out, Marion lined out, and Tayven Rousseau's (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) dying line drive was caught for the final out.
Utah State seized the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. The leadoff hitter singled and the following hitter hit a home run for the 2-1 lead.
SFU countered in the top of the fifth inning. Frank singled and advanced to second on a long fly to left field. Marion came through with the clutch two-out single up the middle to score Frank. Rousseau struck out swinging but the game was tied at 2-2.
The Aggies regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning. The leadoff hitter reached by a hit by pitch and was followed by a single. A fielder's choice at third was the first out. A second fielder's choice at third was apparent but the throw escaped Madeline Barnes (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills) and an Aggie scored. Marsden rallied to obtain the final two outs but USU had the 3-2 lead.
The Red Flash tried to rally in the last two innings but the team was unable to place a runner on base and SFU went down to a 3-2 defeat.
Game Two Recap
The game was called because of rain in the bottom of the third inning with SMC winning 4-1. It was declared a no-contest.Â
