ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Saint Francis University water polo team finished off the Michigan Invite today with two losses against the host Michigan and Salem. The Red Flash go 0-4 on the weekend to go 2-6 this season so far.
After the second day of competition,
Emese Szucs, Julia Bradford and
Taylor Halbauer each recorded three goals in total from both contests.
Michigan 13, Saint Francis 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
-SFU and Michigan went scoreless for almost two minutes before a Wolverine goal gave them the first of the matchup to make it 1-0.
-The Wolverines went on a four-goal run to make it 5-0 to end the first period.
-SFU remained scoreless through two periods while Michigan added two more to make it 7-0 going into halftime.
-With 5:05 left in the third period, SFU was scoreless no more when sophomore
Taylor Halbauer notched a goal on a freshman
Katelyn Meagher assist to make it 7-1.
-The Wolverines tallied two more in the third to make it 9-1, but not before Meagher finds the back of the net with less than a minute to play in the third to make it 9-2.
-Michigan added four more goals to put hem at 13. The fourth quarter came to an end and Michigan took the win, 13-2.
STATS/NOTES
-Sophomore
Heather Jacobson, junior
Rosalinda Rivera, and sophomore
Haley Sanko shared time in front of the goal for the Red Flash. Jacobson allowed seven goals in 16 minutes played, while Rivera allowed two and recorded four saves (.667%) in eight minutes, and Sanko notched a save (.200%) and allowed four goals in eighth minutes.
-SFU took a total 14 shots against Michigan with two finding the back of the net.
-Halbauer was the first to strike while Meagher had the only other SFU goal.
-Sanko recorded two steals.
-Sophomore
Abbie Carter and Meagher both recorded an assist for SFU.
-Five total exclusions were whistled on SFU this matchup.
Salem 14, Saint Francis 10
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Salem notched the first goal of the game a minute and a half in to make it 1-0 Salem.
-Salem took the early 2-0 lead but not before freshman
Emese Szucs finds the back of the cage to cut the lead 2-1 Salem with 4:20 left in the first quarter.
-Szucs tallied another to tie it up, but Salem comes back and goes on a run to score three more to make it 5-2 Salem to finish out the first period.
-The Tigers added three more in the second quarter to make it 8-2.
-Junior
Julia Bradford cuts into the Tigers lead when the ball goes off the net to make it 8-3 Salem with 52 seconds left to play in the first half.
-Three minutes into the third quarter and
Taylor Halbauer added one to make it 8-4 Salem, and 40 seconds later Szucs added another to cut the lead 8-5 with 4:11 left in the third.
-Salem notched two but not before Bradford added a pair to make it 10-7 Salem to end the third quarter.
-20 seconds into the fourth, sophomore
Madeleine Voss hits the back of the net to cut Salem's lead by 2 to make it 10-8.
-Two straight goals by Halbauer and Handali put the Red Flash within two with 3:12 left in the final quarter, Salem stayed ahead 12-10.
-The Tigers added two more and after a scoring bout from the Red Flash they were not able to convert. Salem takes this one, 14-10.
STATS/NOTES
-Szucs and Bradford each tallied three goals for the Red Flash while Halbauer recorded two. Voss and Handali round out the scorers for SFU.
-Jacobson took the loss today playing 18:40 minutes with two saves (.250%). Rivera played 13:20 with one save (.111%).
-SFU tallied a total of 30 shots against the Tigers.

Haiden Lang notched four steals each and Szucs tallied three.
-Lang, sophomore
Abbie Carter, Bradford, and Handali all attributed an assist.
UP NEXT
Saint Francis takes a two week hiatus and are back in action for the Villanova Invite on Saturday March 6
th and Sunday March 7
th where they take on Mount St. Mary's, Villanova, Salem, and the Virginia Military Institute.
