Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Miles McQuiggan

Red Flash outlasted by Bryant in hard-fought NEC clash

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Saint Francis women's lacrosse team received a four-goal effort from senior Emileigh Scott and four other multi-goal performances, but Bryant roared back in the second half and then rebounded from a late Red Flash rally in a 14-12 Saint Francis loss Saturday at Beirne Stadium.

The Red Flash held a 9-6 lead with 25 minutes to go before a six-goal Bulldog run kept the Red Flash scoreless for over 21 minutes. A game-tying goal from senior Livia Baker with 1:50 to go brought the game to 12-12 before the Bulldogs answered with the game-winner and added an insurance goal in the closing seconds.

Junior Elyssa Enrique shattered her career high with an 18-save performance, good for the sixth-highest total in program history. Baker, senior Amanda Heidt, junior Autumn McHenry, and freshman Danielle Hernandez each added two goals for Saint Francis.

COACH COYNE'S COMMENTS
"I am really proud of how we competed today. It was an intense, exciting game that brought out the best in both teams. There was a lot at stake in this game, so it makes the loss sting a little more. Our clear killed us in the second half and allowed Bryant to stay in the game. Even though that aspect didn't go well, we still made big plays when it mattered. We played to win for a full 60. It became a one-possession game and unfortunately for us it went Bryant's way."

KEY MOMENTS
  • Saint Francis led 6-3 before Bryant responded with three goals to seemingly secure a tie game at the half. Scott would spoil that for the hosts with a tally that beat the halftime buzzer for a 7-6 lead.
  • Bryant kept Saint Francis off the scoreboard for a stretch of nearly 22 minutes in the second half to turn a 9-6 deficit into a 12-9 Bulldog lead.
  • Baker scored the game-tying goal with under two minutes to go before the Bulldogs responded with the game-winning and insurance goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • McHenry scored 51 seconds into the contest and Scott scored twice to give the Red Flash a 3-1 lead with 24:30 to play in the opening half.
  • The Bulldogs cut their deficit to one before goals from Hernandez and Scott pushed the advantage to 5-2 with 18:52 to play in the half.
  • Heidt answered a Bryant tally to go ahead 6-3 before the Bulldogs scored the next two, pulling within one at 6-5 with 10:08 to go before halftime. Bryant tied the game with 1:18 to play in the half.
  • Scott found the cage in the final second of the first half to send the Red Flash to the locker room with a 7-6 lead.
  • Baker and Hernandez scored the first two goals of the second half, finding the goal 20 seconds apart, to lead 9-6 with 25:26 to go.
  • The Bulldogs scored the next two to get back within one and re-tied the game with a 9-9 score with 15:27 to play.
  • Bryant took its first lead of the day with 11:31 to go at 10-9 and doubled its advantage less than four minutes later.

STATS
  • Scott corralled three draw controls in addition to her four goals.
  • McHenry added three draw controls and two ground balls.
  • Redshirt senior Peyton LeConte and sophomore Kelly Dickson recorded two caused turnovers each.
  • Four Red Flash players – Baker, Heidt, and juniors C.C. Courter and Catherine Russo – notched an assist.
  • The Red Flash were hindered by 23 turnovers in the contest.

GAME NOTES
  • Saint Francis drops to 0-12 all-time against Bryant. Saturday's contest was the closest margin of defeat since 2012, when Bryant was reclassifying from Division II.
  • Baker scored multiple goals for the seventh-straight game and matched her career high for goals in a season with 20. The midfielder from Maryland is three goals back for Morgan Day for 10th all-time in goals and two assists shy of 10th in program history.
  • Enrique's 18-save performance was the sixth-highest total in program history and the most since Danielle Pokusa turned aside 19 Central Connecticut shots in 2011.
  • Scott's four-goal performance moved her within five goals of Kate Simmons for second in program history and within two points of Jessica Mazzur for fourth in the program record book.
