SELECT GAME NOTES VS. CORNELL (FULL GAME NOTES PDF)
OPENING TIP
• Monday's game between Saint Francis and Cornell marks the 10th meeting in the all-time series dating back to the 1979-80 campaign.
• The Big Red has won four of the last five meetings to take a 5-4 edge in the series after downing the Red Flash 93-80 last year in New York.
• It will be the fourth meeting between the two teams in Loretto and the first since the 2012-13 season.
THE WORD ON CORNELL
• The Big Red comes into the contest 1-1 after SUNY-Dehli 114-57 on Thursday.
• Chris Manon (17 points), Greg Dolan (16 points), Nazir Williams (12 points), Keller Boothy (11 points) and Isaiah Gray (10 points) all had double figures in the game.
LAST TIME WE MET
• Cornell defeated Saint Francis 93-80 on Nov. 24, 2021 in Ithaca, N.Y.
• Ronell Giles Jr. paced the Red Flash with 19 points, while Josh Cohen (18 points) and Marlon Hargis (17 points) also found double figures.
• Nazir Williams (21 points) led the Big Red and Keller Boothby added 17 points.
LAST TIME OUT
• Junior Maxwell Land registered a career-high 26 points to power Saint Francis past Hartford 77-53 on Saturday.
• Land has scored double figures in all three home openers in his career and is averaging 18.3 points per game in the inaugural home game of the year.
• Freshman Landon Moore added 14 points, six assists and six rebounds in his first game in Loretto.
• Redshirt junior Josh Cohen added 11 points and six rebounds.
• Moore and fellow freshman Cam Gregory were both in the starting lineup against the Hawks, marking the first time two freshmen started at home for Saint Francis since Randall Gaskins, Jr. and Keith Braxton on March 1, 2017 against Bryant.
• The game was the second edition of the Jack Phelan Classic, honoring former Saint Francis student-athlete and former Hartford head coach Jack Phelan. Over 80 friends and family members of Phelan were at the game.
FRANKIES TIDBITS IN A FLASH
• Saint Francis is looking to win its first two home games for the first time since the 2018-19 season and for the sixth time under head coach Rob Krimmel.
• The Red Flash are in the midst of playing five of seven games at DeGol Arena, marking the first time since the 2013-14 season the squad had five of seven games at home. Those games were also during NEC play in that campaign.
• The Frankies will have six non-conference home games for the first time since the 2006-07 season. That year the Red Flash played six of its first nine non-conference games at home, but that year the Northeast Conference also had two conference games in December so the squad played six of its first 11 games at home.
• Saint Francis is 5-11 against the Ivy League all-time including 2-3 at home.
• The Big Red is the only Ivy team the Red Flash has played this century with the last meetings against the other teams from the conference coming back in the 1990s: Columbia (1988-89), Penn (1987-88) and Brown (1983-84).
• Saint Francis will momentarily halt its stretch of home games to make its first trip to Butler and the iconic Hinkle Fieldhouse on Thursday.
• The Fieldhouse hosted one of the most famous basketball games ever with the "Milan Miracle" in 1954, when tiny Milan High School's basketball team defeated the much larger Muncie Central High School team. Milan player Bobby Plump made the last-minute score to win the game and went on to become a star player at Butler. The Milan team and the tournament win also served as the inspiration for the fictional Hickory High School team in the movie, Hoosiers (1986). The final scenes of the movie's championship game were also filmed at the fieldhouse.
• Saint Francis looks to begin the season 2-1 for the 20th time since the 1950-51 season.
• With a win, the team would be 2-1 under Krimmel for the second time and the first since 2015-16.
• With a loss, the team would open the season 1-2 for the 38th time in team history and the seventh-straight year and ninth time in the Krimmel era.
• Junior Maxwell Land became the second player this season to score 20 points in a game with his 26 points performance against Hartford on Saturday.
• Redshirt junior Josh Cohen had 21 points against St. Bonaventure on Monday. The duo are the only two players on the team to register 25 points or more since the Keith Braxton era ended in 2019-20.
