SELECT GAME NOTES VS. BUTLER (FULL GAME NOTES PDF)
OPENING TIP
• Thursday's game between Saint Francis and Butler marks the second meeting in the all-time series dating back to the 1975-76 season.
• The Bulldogs won the meeting 47 years ago in Hinkle Arena, 67-64.
• Butler was a member of the Indiana Collegiate Conference in the inaugural meeting, but this will be the first meeting between the two teams with the Bulldogs in the Big East.
• Saint Francis is 0-33 all-time against the Big East including 0-27 on the road.
• It will be the first meeting for the Red Flash against a Big East team since falling 78-65 at Marquette in 2016-17.
THE WORD ON BUTLER
• Butler comes into the contest 1-1 after falling 68-62 at Penn State on Monday. Penn State is located 61.4 miles (approximately 59 minutes) from Loretto and the campus of Saint Francis.
• Manny Bates paced the Bulldogs with 16 points and 10 rebounds against the Nittany Lions. Jayden Taylor (14 points) and Simas Lukosius (13 points) also found double figures on the night.
• All four players are averaging double figures in points with Bates leading the way and averaging a double-double with 20.5 ppg and 10.5 rpg.
• Harris (14.0 ppg.), Taylor (13.0 ppg.) and Lukosius (12.0 ppg.) are also averaging double figures.
LAST TIME OUT
•. Despite being down 13 points in the final five minutes, freshman Landon Moore powered a 20-10 run to end the game with 10 points and Saint Francis had a chance to tie the game in the waning seconds of the game against Cornell on Monday. The Big Red defeated Saint Francis 80-77.
• Moore scored the last seven points of the game for the Red Flash including an acrobatic 3-pointer with eight seconds left to cut the margin to 79-77. After a made free throw, Moore raced down the floor and heaved a half-court shot that fell short as time expired.
• Josh Cohen paced Saint Francis with 24 points and eight rebounds. Moore finished with 15 points, while Maxwell Land registered his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Marlon Hargis added 12 points.
FRANKIES TIDBITS IN A FLASH
• Saint Francis is looking for its first win against a Big East opponent and its fourth victory against a Power 6 Conference team.
• The Red Flash defeated Pittsburgh (ACC) in the 2020-21 season opener 80-70 and Rutgers (Big 10) in 2014-15 (73-68). Saint Francis is also credited with a win against Michigan from the 1994-95 season due to the Wolverines using an illegal player. Michigan had won the game 84-52.
• Saint Francis will also play Ohio State (Big 10, December 3) and Miami (ACC, December 17 from Power 6 Conferences.
• The Loretto program is 3-78 against Power 6 Conference teams overall and 3-70 on the road.
• It will be the 21st time head coach Rob Krimmel has faced a Power 6 opponent with wins against Pittsburgh and Rutgers on his resume.
• Hinkle Fieldhouse is considered one of the most iconic arenas in the country. It will be another arena for Krimmel and his staff to cross off of its bucket list after playing at Duke (Cameron Indoor) in 2017-18, Pauley Pavilion (UCLA) and North Carolina (Dean Smith Center) in the regular season and Indiana (Assembly Hall) in the NIT in the postseason in 2018-19.
• The Fieldhouse hosted one of the most famous basketball games ever with the "Milan Miracle" in 1954, when tiny Milan High School's basketball team defeated the much larger Muncie Central High School team. Milan player Bobby Plump made the last-minute score to win the game and went on to become a star player at Butler. The Milan team and the tournament win also served as the inspiration for the fictional Hickory High School team in the movie, Hoosiers (1986). The final scenes of the movie's championship game were also filmed at the fieldhouse.
• Butler head coach Thad Matta will face Saint Francis for the first time with the Bulldogs, but it will not be the first time he will face the Red Flash. When Matta was at Ohio State he beat Saint Francis 110-47 in 2009-10. Krimmel was an assistant coach for the Red Flash in that meeting.
• During the 1975-76 season, which was the last time Saint Francis played Butler, was also the only other time the Red Flash team traveled to Hawaii. The Frankies will head to Hawaii on December 11 this season. Saint Francis played three games in Hawaii after the New Year in the 1975-76 campaign and then stopped at Butler on its way back to Pennsylvania.
• This game will also be the closest game to his hometown for freshman Landon Moore, the current Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week. Moore is from Bloomington, Ill., which is about two hours from Indianapolis.
• Saint Francis returns home to spend its Thanksgiving in Loretto with three games next week: Lehigh (Nov. 21), Franciscan (Nov. 23) and American (Nov. 26).
