Women’s Basketball Concludes the Weekend Against Coppin State

LORETTO, Pa. –
 Saint Francis University women's basketball wraps up a two-game home stand with a Sunday, Dec. 11 matchup against Coppin State at 2 p.m.
 
Saint Francis Quick Hits
Filippa Goula continues to pace Saint Francis with 8.6 points per game and has five double-digit scoring games this season. She ranks tied for 19th in the NCAA Division I with a 93.1 free throw percentage and is third in the Northeast Conference with 3.0 assists per game. Aaliyah Moore extended her NEC lead in rebounds per game to 9.0 and is 1.6 better than any other NEC player. She has three games of at least 10 rebounds and a season-high 13 against Towson. Layla Laws ranks third in the conference with 1.9 steals per game and seventh with 0.8 blocks per game. She is the only Red Flash player in the top-10 of either category.
 
Last Time Out
Saint Francis returned home for the first time in 19 days on Dec. 8 against Vermont and took a 68-48 defeat. Saint Francis and Vermont were tied at nine just over four minutes into the game before the Catamounts took a 14-10 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Vermont outscored Saint Francis 22-6 and took a 36-16 lead into halftime. In the second half, Vermont lead by at least 20 points until Saint Francis cut the deficit to 61-43 with seven minutes remaining in the game. The Catamounts extended the lead to as many as 25 points in the fourth quarter before clinching its 20-point win.
 
Scouting Coppin State
The Eagles enter Sunday's matchup with a 2-8 record and are on a current five-game losing streak. The streak featured three losses of less than 10 points, the only loss more than 10 was a 93-75 defeat at Syracuse. Coppin State's two wins this season are 78-49 over Winthrop and 58-53 over Saint Peter's. Jewel Watkins leads the Eagles with 13.8 points per game, while Mossi Staples follows close behind with 12.8. Both players rank in the MEAC top-five. Staples also ranks second in the MEAC with 3.4 assists per game and is seventh with 2.0 steals per game. Colleen Bucknor leads the Eagles with 8.0 rebounds per game and is a one-time MEAN Defensive Player of the Week selection this season.

All-Time vs. Coppin State
The Red Flash own a 2-1 advantage in the all-time matchup, with wins in 2010 and 2011. Coppin State won the most recent matchup 68-38 last season. The Red Flash own a 1-0 record at home in the matchup. Sam Miller led the Red Flash in the matchup last season with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Watkins and Staples led Coppin State with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Around the NEC
Fairleigh Dickinson remains the only team in the NEC with an above-.500 record at 7-3 and Wagner carries an even 4-4 record. All other NEC teams still have two or fewer victories. The last victory for an NEC team came on Dec. 3 when Fairleigh Dickinson defeated UMass Lowell 62-48 and Central Connecticut defeated Bryant 58-54. The conference is on a 12-game losing streak as of Dec. 10. All-nine NEC teams will be in action this weekend with four teams playing Dec. 10 and five teams on Dec. 11.
