Women’s Basketball Heads Back on the Road to Youngstown State

LORETTO, Pa. –
 Saint Francis University women's basketball begins a stretch of three straight games on the road with a trip to Youngstown State on Friday, Dec. 16 for a 5:15 p.m. tip-off.
 
Saint Francis Quick Hits
Aaliyah Moore earned the first Northeast Conference Prime Performer of her career after her first collegiate double-double against Coppin State. In the game she set a new career-high with 14 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. She is tied for 33rd in the NCAA Division I with 9.7 rebounds per game and has four double-digit rebound games this season. Sam Miller scored a season-high 12 points against Coppin State and has back-to-back double-digit scoring games. Adison Novosel produced a career-high three steals against Coppin State, while Layla Laws still paces the team with 15 this season. Laws remains in the NEC top-10 with 1.7 steals per game and 0.7 blocks per game. Filippa Goula is tied for the Saint Francis lead with 8.3 points per game and is third in the NEC with 3.0 assists per game. Her 93.5 free throw percentage is 13th in the NCAA Division I.
 
Last Time Out
Saint Francis took a 66-57 loss to Coppin State at home. Coppin State had its largest lead of the first quarter 14-8 with under three and a half minutes left before Saint Francis went on a 5-0 run and cut the deficit to 14-13. In the second quarter, the Eagles led by six points, 29-23, with under three minutes remaining before Saint Francis scored the final six points of the half and tied the game at 29. Both teams remained with three points of each other in the third quarter and Coppin State ended the quarter with a 46-43 lead. In the fourth quarter, the Eagles opened its largest lead to that point 53-45 with seven minutes remaining in the game. Destini Ward had Saint Francis back within one score, 56-53, before Coppin State went on a 10-4 run to end the game and seal its 66-57 victory. Saint Francis held Coppin State to 32.2-percent shooting from the field, which was the lowest of the season. The previous low Saint Francis held an opponent to was 36.7-percent at Morgan State.
 
Scouting Youngstown State
The Penguins enter Friday's game with a 6-3 overall and 2-0 Horizon League record. Youngstown State took a 70-41 victory over NEC member St. Francis Brooklyn on Nov. 26. Lilly Ritz leads Youngstown State with 18.7 points per game, which is second in the Horizon League and 37th in the NCAA. Her 61.1 field goal percentage is 19th in the NCAA. She also leads the Horizon League with 10.7 rebounds per game and is fourth with 1.8 steals per game. Malia Magestro is second on the team with 13.2 points per game, while Megan Callahan is third with 9.0 points per game. As a team, Youngstown State is third in the Horizon League with 69.3 points per game and second with 57.7 points allowed per game.

All-Time vs. Youngstown State
Youngstown State owns a 4-3 advantage over Saint Francis in the seven-game history between the two programs. The Penguins won the past two matchups in 2018 and 2019, while Saint Francis won three of the previous four matchups. In the last matchup, a 56-46 Youngstown State victory, Miller was the only current Saint Francis player on the team. She finished with eight points on 4-of-9 shooting and six rebounds. Mady Aulbach and Jen Wendler were the only two current Youngstown State players in the game. Wendler scored a game-high 12 points, while Aulbach was held scoreless.

Around the NEC
Fairleigh Dickinson remains the only above-.500 NEC team at 7-4, while the second-place team is Wagner at 4-5. Stonehill is 3-8 and the only other NEC team with more than two wins this season. Saint Francis visits Youngstown State, Merrimack hosts Fisher, Wagner hosts NJIT, Sacred Heart hosts Vermont and Central Connecticut visits Hartford for the NEC teams in action this weekend.

Saint Francis heads to the Tulane Holiday Tournament in New Orleans. The Red Flash are set to face Tulane on Tuesday, Dec. 20 for a 1 p.m. ET tip-off. Saint Francis will face wither VCU or Tennessee Tech on Wednesday, Dec. 21 based on Tuesday's results.
