SELECT GAME NOTES VS. STONEHILL (FULL GAME NOTES PDF)
OPENING TIP
• Saturday's game between Saint Francis and Stonehill marks the first-ever meeting after the Skyhawks joined the NEC in 2022-23.
THE WORD ON STONEHILL
• The Skyhawks come into the contest 5-10 overall and 1-0 in NEC play after securing its first league win with a 74-67 win against Sacred Heart on Thursday.
• Andrew Sims paced the Skyhawks with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Isaiah Burnett and Max Zegarowski each had 10 points.
AGAINST NEW NEC MEMBERS
• Saint Francis is one of the four remaining charter members of the Northeast Conference that began as ECAC Metro in 1981-82.
• The inaugural season included University of Baltimore, FDU, LIU, Loyola, Marist, Robert Morris, Saint Francis, St. Francis Brooklyn, Siena and Towson.
• Stonehill becomes the 10th different school to join the conference over the last 41 years.
• The Red Flash is 3-6 in the first meeting against a new member in the NEC, but has a 5-4 mark in the first tilt in Loretto.
• Saint Francis holds wins against Monmouth (1985-86), Mount St. Mary's (1989-90), CCSU (1997-98), Quinnipiac (1998-99) and Sacred Heart (1999-00) in the first game in Loretto against new membership.
• Stonehill will attempt to become the third-straight new member to win the inaugural matchup at DeGol Arena after Bryant (2008-09) and Merrimack (2019-20) were both victorious in the first meeting against the Frankies.
LAST TIME OUT
• Freshman Landon Moore led Saint Francis in points (20), rebounds (6) and assists (5), but the 80-72 win for Saint Francis against CCSU in the NEC opener was truly a team effort on Thursday.
• Moore, redshirt junior Josh Cohen, redshirt junior Luke Ruggery and junior Ronell Giles, Jr. combined for 36 of the 44 Red Flash points in the second half to power the squad to the win.
• Ruggery (15 points), Cohen (13 points), Giles (10 points) and junior Maxwell Land (10 points) all finished the game in double figures.
• It was the fourth time this season Saint Francis hit 14 baskets from behind the arc and the second most in 2022-23 only behind the 16 treys against Franciscan on November 23.
• Saint Francis started NEC play with a win for the first time since 2017-18 and for the 19th time in the 42 years in the league.
• The Red Flash hit 14-21 (.667) from 3, which is the highest percentage in the NEC in a single game with at least 14 3s made since 2010-11.
AN SFU WIN WOULD
• Be the 10th time the Red Flash has started the NEC slate 2-0 in program history
• Be the third time under head coach Rob Krimmel the team has started league play with two-straight wins
• Give Saint Francis its first winning streak in 2022-23
• Be the first win against NEC new member Stonehill
• Be the third win in program history on New Year's Eve and the first since the 2017-18 season.
TRENDING UP
• Freshman Landon Moore has posted a pair of 20-point performances in his last three games and has registered double figures in three-straight contests.
• The freshman is averaging 20.3 points per game and is shooting 21-for-37 from the floor (56.8 percent) in that span. Moore was shooting 8-for-34 from the field (23.5 percent) with 26 total points in the previous four games leading up to this stretch.
• It was the the first time that he paced the team in points and rebounds, but his sixth time having the team-lead in assists.
• Redshirt junior Luke Ruggery notched 15 points on Thursday after scoring a career-high 18 points in his last game in Loretto against Saint Vincent on his birthday (December 8). The redshirt junior, who was 5-for-5 from the floor and behind the arc on Thursday, is shooting 11-for-14 from the floor and 10-for-13 from 3-point land in his last two tilts at DeGol Arena and is averaging 16.5 points per game in those two games.
• After redshirt junior Josh Cohen scored 40 points in an 82-76 loss to Lehigh on November 21, he made the comment in the postgame press conference that he would trade all of those points in for a win. He is averaging 24.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in the 10 Red Flash losses, but he is averaging almost 10 points less at 14.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in the four victories.
• In fact, the Red Flash has recorded a win in three of Cohen's four lowest point outputs. Also in that context, Cohen also played his three lowest number of minutes in the three wins before CCSU.
• Junior Ronell Giles, Jr. posted double figures for the second-straight game after registering 12 points at Robert Morris on December 21. It is the first time the junior has scored double figures in back-to-back games for the first time since he had nine-straight 10+ games from November 24-December 22.
FRANKIES TIDBITS IN A FLASH
• For the 19th time in the 42-year history in the Northeast Conference the Red Flash started league play with a victory.
• Some may think that one game, let alone the inaugural game, cannot have an impact on the outcome of the rest of the season, the the statistics for Saint Francis will disagree.
• In the previous 18 seasons the team started out with a win, the Loretto program has produced 12 non-losing seasons (66.6 percent) and eight winning seasons (44.4 percent).
• Conversely, the 23 times the team opened the year with a loss and the team went on to post a non-losing mark eight times (34.7 percent) and a winning mark six times (26.0 percent).
• At DeGol Arena, a win might be even more significant with 10 non-losing seasons (71.4 percent) in the 14 previous seasons the team opened at home with win and six winning records (42.8 percent).
• However, in the seven seasons the Frankies lost the first game in Loretto, only once the squad had a winning mark (14.2 percent).
• Under head coach Rob Krimmel, the team has finished with a non-losing record in NEC play the last three times after a win to start circuit play. His first season of 2012-13, also a win against CCSU, was the only time the team did not have a winning league record after a win to start.
• Krimmel has lost the first game of the NEC six times, but in three of his last five inaugural league openers (2016-17, 2017-18, 2019-20) the team went on to post a winning mark and advanced to the NEC title game in 2016-17 and 2019-20.
• Saint Francis started the 1990-91 league slate with a win at home and went on to win the team's only tournament title. In addition, Krimmel led his team to a win in the 2018-19 opener at home and advanced to the NEC title game that season too.
• The Flash looks to start the conference slate 2-0 for the 10th time in team history and the first time since the 2015-16 season.
• A 2-0 start has also occurred in 1982-83, 2004-05, 2009-10, 2011-12, 2014-15 and 2015-16. The team has opened the league calendar with three-straight wins in 2002-03, five-consecutive tilts in 1986-87 and the 1990-91 NEC Championship squad holds the mark for the best start to league play with a 6-0 mark.
• Saint Francis will host the first two league games for the 11th time on Saturday against Stonehill. The Red Flash has gone 2-0 in eight of the previous 10 occurrences. Only in 2012-13 and 2018-19 did the Frankies win the first game and lose the second on to finish 1-1 after two games at home.
• The team has also started NEC play 1-0 on the road five times but has only come out 2-0 after two games at home in program history.
• Saint Francis will be playing on New Year's Eve for the ninth time dating back to the 1951-52 season, but this will be the second time, and second-straight time, that if Dick Clark was still alive that he could do a New Year's Rockin' Eve celebration in Loretto.
• The Red Flash are 2-6 on the last day of the calendar year and 1-4 under Krimmel on the date.
• It will be the fourth time the Loretto team will play a conference game on the date and the Frankies are looking to ring in the New Year with a conference win for the second time after defeating Bryant 86-82 in overtime in 2017-18 on the road.
• Saint Francis also defeated Fordham 74-71 at the Carousel Tournament in 1958-59 in North Carolina.
• After the game against Stonehill, the Red Flash will play four of its six games in January on the road, starting at Wagner on January 7.
