Saint Francis University men's volleyball defeated the Wildcats of Daemen University over four sets on Friday to go 13-10 overall.
Nathan Zini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle Catholic) led the Red Flash in kills by recording a new single-game career high of 13 kills on Friday.
Blake Liprando (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) followed closely in behind Zini with ten kills. While also leading the Loretto, Pa., squad with two serving aces and seven digs on the day.
TURNING POINTS OF THE GAME
With the Red Flash up 2-1 in the match, the fourth set was the biggest turning point in the game for Saint Francis men's volleyball. Saint Francis started the set off with a 5-1 run to not allow the Wildcats to lead in the fourth set until very late in the set to make the score 21-18 in favor of Daemen. The late lead required the fourth set to be extended. However, the Red Flash were able to come on top to claim the fourth and final set with a score of 29-27 thanks to a kill from Liprando followed by an attack error from Daemen.
FLASH MOMENTS
The Red Flash got on the board first with a 2-0 run to start the match thanks to a kill from
Andrew Deardorff (Itasca, Ill./Lake Park) and a service ace from Liprando. The Saint Francis squad maintained this lead until the Wildcats were able to bounce back and take its first lead of the game with a 10-9 score. With the Red Flash down at a score of 21-17, the squad was able to go on a 3-1 run to get back within two. However, that wouldn't be enough for Daemen to claim the first set, 25-20.
The Wildcats got on the board first to start the second set off and held the Red Flash from gaining its first lead of the second set until the score was 6-5, this turned the fight for the second set into a back-and-forth battle. With the second set tied 23-23, a kill from Zini and a set point kill from Deardorff secured the second set for Saint Francis with a score of 25-23 to tie the game at one a piece.
The third set was more of the same with both programs battling it out. However, it was a 5-1 run that put the Red Flash on top with a score of 17-15 for the squad to maintain the lead for the remainder of the third set and claim the third set, 25-19 to put the Saint Francis squad up 2-1 in the match.
FLASH NUGGETS
The Red Flash continue to hold the overall advantage and stay undefeated over the Wildcats at 2-0.
Michael Mosbacher (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) made his third career debut in Friday's match towards the end of the third set.
Peyton Blain (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) reached his 100th career dig in Friday's victory over the Wildcats.
