Volleyball Falls 3-1 to Gardner-Webb in Season Opener

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
>> Saint Francis University women's volleyball fell 3-1 in season opener on Friday to the Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb University.
 
>> The Bulldogs secured the first two and final sets, while the Red Flash were able to claim the third set.
 
>> Madi Tyus (Plano, Texas) led the way for the Red Flash with 18 kills and 18 digs on the evening, while Emma Fenton (Latrobe, Pa.) led the squad with 33 assists and four serving aces.
 
TURNING POINT OF THE GAME
The fourth and final set held several long rallies between both volleyball programs. With the Red Flash down 21-13 the squad came up with a 7-2 run that put the team back in the running for the fourth set. However, the Bulldogs were able to come away with the fourth set, 25-20 for Gardner-Webb to claim the 3-1 victory.

FLASH MOMENTS
The Bulldogs got on the board first in the third set. However, the 1-0 lead was the only time the Boiling Springs, N.C., program held the lead in the third set. The Red Flash claimed its biggest lead of the night in this set with a 21-14 lead over the Bulldogs. A service ace from Fenton secured the third set for the Red Flash at a score of 25-18.

FLASH NUGGETS
The Red Flash maintained the lead in the first set early on. However, the Bulldogs came into the first set to turn it into a battle between both programs. Gardner-Webb was able to claim the first set, 25-22.
 
Gardner-Webb took an early 6-2 lead over the Red Flash, but the Saint Francis squad rallied back with a 7-0 run that featured a service ace from Korrin Burns (Shippenville, Pa.) and a kill from Maggie Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa.) to give the Red Flash the 9-6 lead. The Bulldogs came back to take the lead at the end of the second set with a score of 23-22 which allowed the end of the second set to go back-and-forth. Gardner-Webb was able to come away with the extended second set, 29-27.

UP NEXT
The Red Flash will continue at home on Saturday with the Red Flash Classic by taking on Bellarmine at 11:00 a.m. and Bucknell at 7:00 p.m.
