Women’s Basketball Heads on the Road to LIU

LORETTO, Pa. –
 Saint Francis University women's basketball heads on the road on Saturday, Jan. 14 for a 2 p.m. tip-off at LIU.
 
Saint Francis Quick Hits
Aaliyah Moore earned her third Northeast Conference Prime Performer selection of the season after she earned her third double-double at Central Connecticut. She ranks 24th in the NCAA Division I with 10.1 rebounds per game, 2.6 higher than second-best in the NEC, and leads Saint Francis with 8.4 points per game. Freshman Semaya Turner scored a career-high 12 points against Central Connecticut, which included a then-game-tying three-point shot with 55 seconds remaining in the game. Filippa Goula ranks ninth in the NCAA with a 93.3 free throw percentage and third on Saint Francis with 7.1 points per game. Layla Laws ranks second on the team with 7.5 points per game and has 22 points in the past two games. She also leads Saint Francis with 1.3 steals per game, which ranks ninth in the NEC.
 
Last Time Out
Saint Francis fell to 1-2 in conference play after a 64-60 loss at Central Connecticut. With the game tied 8-8 halfway through the first quarter, Saint Francis produced an 8-1 run over the final five minutes of the fame and led 16-9. Saint Francis continued its run with a 7-3 start to the second quarter before an 8-2 run by Central Connecticut cut the Saint Francis lead to 25-20. Across the final four minutes of the half, the Red Flash build an 11-point, 35-24, lead. In the third quarter, Central Connecticut started with an 8-2 run before Saint Francis took a 12-point, 44-32, lead with six minutes remaining in the quarter. The Blue Devils went on a 15-3 run across the remainder of the quarter and tied the game 47-47. Central Connecticut was either tied or led the entire fourth quarter. With 55 second remaining, Turner hit a three-point shot that tied the game before Central Connecticut regained the lead with 32 seconds remaining. The Blue Devils converted their free throws to seal a 64-60 win.
 
Scouting LIU
The Sharks enter Saturday's game with an 0-3 conference record, 2-13 overall record and are on a current 12-game losing streak. LIU has lost its first three conference games, against Fairleigh Dickinson, Sacred Heart and Wagner, by a combined 64 points. Ashley Austin leads LIU with 11 points per game on 47-percent shooting from the field. She is also tied with Cristina Bermejo for the team lead with 21 steals, which ranks top-10 in the conference. Emaia O'Brien is second on the team with 9.6 points per game, while Iris Mbulito is third with 7.6 points per game and leads the team with 7.1 rebounds per game. As a team, LIU allows 71.7 points per game and has a scoring margin of minus-15.3.
 
All-Time vs. LIU
Saint Francis holds a 53-21 all-time advantage over LIU since the first meeting in 1986. The Sharks won the most recent meeting between the programs 69-62 last season in overtime. Sam Miller led current Saint Francis players with nine points and O'Brien led LIU returners with 13 points. In Brooklyn, N.Y., Saint Francis holds a 19-14 advantage compared to a 30-7 advantage at home. Saint Francis has won all-four neutral site meetings.

Wagner sits atop the NEC standings as the only 3-0 team, followed by three 2-0 teams, Fairleigh Dickinson, Sacred Heart and St. Francis Brooklyn. LIU and Merrimack are the only conference teams without a victory, while the three remaining teams are all 1-2. On Saturday, St. Francis Brooklyn visits Sacred Heart in a matchup between undefeated teams and Fairleigh Dickinson looks to remain unbeaten against Central Connecticut. Saint Francis visits LIU and Stonehill visits Merrimack to round out NEC matchups.
