SELECT GAME NOTES VS. ST. FRANCIS BROOKLYN (FULL GAME NOTES PDF)
OPENING TIP
• Friday's game between Saint Francis and St. Francis Brooklyn marks the 90th meeting in the all-time series dating back to the 1929-30 season.
• Despite the Terriers winning four of the last five meetings, the Red Flash cling to a 45-44 edge in the series.
• The Loretto program has won four of the last five games at DeGol Arena.
THE WORD ON ST. FRANCIS BROOKLYN
• The Terriers come into the contest winners of three-straight games and 9-9 overall and 2-3 in NEC play after defeating LIU 73-66 on Monday.
• Tedrick Wilcox, Jr., the current NEC Co-Player of the Week, posted 17 points against the Sharks. Roy Clarke had 13 points and Syrus Grisby added 10 points.
• Wilcox is averaging 10.5 points per game and Larry Moreno is avearing 11.0 points per game and Josiah Harris leads the team with 8.0 rebounds per game.
LAST TIME WE MET
• St. Francis Brooklyn defeated Saint Francis 80-72 in overtime on February 19, 2022 at DeGol Arena.
• Josh Cohen posted 25 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Zahree Harrison poured in a career-high 20 points.
• Patrick Emilien led the Terriers with 21 points. Rob Higgins (20 points), Michael Cubbage (20 points) and Larry Moreno (14 points) also scored double figures.
LAST TIME OUT
• Saint Francis nearly rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half, but junior Maxwell Land's 3-pointer at the buzzer hit off the front of the rim as time expired in a 54-51 loss at Sacred Heart on Monday.
• Redshirt junior Josh Cohen paced the Red Flash with 23 points and nine rebounds, while junior Ronell Giles, Jr. added a season-high 14 points and seven rebounds. Land had nine points and eight rebounds.
AN SFU WIN WOULD
• Give the Red Flash its second-best start in team history for the third time in program history at 5-1
• Continue team's best home winning streak since 2019-20 with its fifth-straight win. The 2019-20 team won the final nine games of the season at DeGol Arena
• Improve the Red Flash to 7-3 at home
• End a two-game losing streak to the Terriers
TRENDING UP
• Junior Ronell Giles, Jr. posted his most points in a game with his 14 points since registering 18 points against Wagner on December 29, 2022 in Loretto. Giles is averaging 10.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in his last two gameS after playing season highs in both games of 32 and 34 minutes, respectively. He has registered three double-figure point performances three times season, all in his last five games. Since his return against Saint Vincent on December 8, the junior ranks second on the team in assists (20) and steals (9) in the last eight games.
• During preseason, rebounding was a big topic of conversation and junior Maxwell Land has taken that lesson to heart, posting 11 games this season with at least five boards and five games with at least eight boards, including the last two tilts. Land ranks second on the team with 5.5 rebounds per game, while also sitting in the NEC Top-10 in the category. The junior is also a major reason the team wins games, playing in six of the seven victories and pacing the team with 17.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in those six victories. He did not play in the win against Saint Vincent on December 8.
• Saint Francis is 6-1 this season when it makes at least eight baskets from behind the arc, which is also the total needed to give away free a free Big Mac at home games.
• The squad made 11 treys against LIU on Saturday, marking the fifth time this season the team has dialed up long distance at least 11 times in a game this season. It was also the fifth time the team shot over 50.0 from distance with four of those occasions coming when the team made 11 triples.
• While the Petula Clark will tell you that you can forget all your troubles and forget all of your cares and go downtown, there is another area that has been key to the Red Flash success this season. The team is 6-3 when it has more points or even number of points inside the paint.
FRANKIES TIDBITS IN A FLASH
• Redshirt junior Josh Cohen was named to the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List on Thursday.
• The trophy is given out annually to an outstanding men's college basketball player annually and is considered to be the oldest of its kind. It has been handed out since 1959.
• The award was called the Player of the Year Trophy until 1998 when they changed the award in honor of Robertson, who was the first two recipients of the award in 1958-59 and 1959-60.
• Cohen is the first NEC player to ever be named to the Watch List, although the list has grown from 15 to almost 50 players over the years.
• Two players joining Cohen on the list are Zach Edey (Purdue) and Drew Timme (Gonzaga), who has been linked to the Red Flash big man this season. The trio are the only three players in NCAA Division I to average at least 21.0 points per game and shooting 60.0 percent from the floor this season.
• While the loss at Sacred Heart derailed the chance to match the best start in NEC play in program history (6-0, 1990-91), the 4-1 start is the second-best start in team history.
• Saint Francis is 4-1 in the first five league games for the sixth time in team history, joining the 1986-87, 1989-90, 1997-98, 2014-15 and 2017-18 teams.
• With a win, the Red Flash would continue its second-best start for the third time and join the fraternity with the 1989-90 and 1997-98 teams.
• The squad is also coming home with a four-game home winning streak intact thanks to wins against Saint Vincent (December 8), CCSU (December 29), Stonehill (December 30) and LIU (January 14).
• The last time the team won at least five games at home was the 2019-20 season when the squad did not lose in its final nine games at DeGol Arena including two postseason wins on its way to the NEC Championship Game for the third time in four years.
• That season the team also enjoyed a five-game winning streak and only a loss at home to Merrimack wrecked the chance to win the final 15 games in Loretto.
• Saint Francis has posted a home winning streak of five or more games for the seventh time under head coach Rob Krimmel.
• The team is also looking for a five-game winning streak after posting just four wins total in each of the last two seasons at home.
• Junior Maxwell Land, who hit is 100th career 3-pointer on January 16 against LIU, is creeping up on another milestone. Land needs 16 points to become the 44th player in Red Flash NEC history (dating back to 1981-82) to reach 700 points in his career and the 17th player under Krimmel to reach the total.
• When Saint Francis makes its return trip to Brooklyn, the game will not be played at the Pope Center. St. Francis Brooklyn is current between gyms with the moving of the campus to another building and will be playing at the ARC on the campus of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn this season. The tip will be at 2 p.m. on a Thursday.
• After the game on Friday, the Red Flash will be on the road for the next two weekends and three of the next four weekends.
• The squad will head to Fairleigh Dickinson on January 26 and CCSU two days later. The Knights currently are an NEC best 5-0 coming into Friday's competition.
• Saint Francis will also head to Massachusetts to face Merrimack (February 2) for the first time this season and make its first trip to Stonehill (February 9) before returning to Loretto to host Sacred Heart on ESPNU on Thursday, February 9.
